Best ant farm for starters!
The media could not be loaded. This ant farm arrived in perfect shape with good packaging. My 10 yo set it all up with assistance from me when adding the sand. You really need two people to add the sand as it doesn’t go in all the way and you will end up with a huge sand mess if not careful. You have to stop and shake the tank to get the sand to move down.. which is fine! The water system is good. They should note in the directions that the white little cylinder sponges piece that is inside is actually needed and to not be removed. We didn’t know what those were for and thought we needed to remove them. DON’T remove these as they are necessary for the farm. The tank does leak water some so place a towel below. You have to add water to the sand(as noted in the directions) in order to allow the ants to dig and move the sand. We are so happy with this set and recommend it for every exploring young mind wanting to watch some of nature’s best creations. We will post another video of how much the ants have dug in 24 hrs…. They are already getting at it!

Oregonians Beware
Great kit!! Oregon residents be aware it is illegal to ship ants in your state. So no ants will come with it.

Drowning or dying of thirst?
We bought this ant farm and then had to wait a few months for cooler weather to order the ants, which is understandable. But we waiting and we were VERY excited for the day we could set everything up. We bought the ants from a different company and the whole experience was bad from the start. It was very discouraging to have half of them dead right from the beginning. We also had to dump the dead in with the live and later clean out the area the best we could. It was like starting with a grave yard for an ant farm and they continued to die over the course of a few weeks. I think the ones that died later was because of the ant farm itself. We bought one with a tube and sponge that was placed at the top and sat on top another sponge. The sponge let all the water out into the sand within an hour. We could not figure out how to give the ants the water they desperately needed without drowning their home. We tried water every other day, but it was not enough and the sand was still to wet. There was even a point the pour creatures were trying to break into the watering area to get water. It was a relief when they all died and their torture came to an end.

Hoping this will work, but the assembly instructions are atrocious.
This is the second Ant Farm I received; the first arrived with most of the accessories missing (most importantly, the water tube). They did replace the kit immediately; this one has everything, including some items I can't figure out (small tube of white powder, little metal tray). The instructions are terrible. After a lot of looking around and figuring things out, I realized that the sand filling hole was in the back (even though the illustration for this particular shaped item showed it as being in the top); I was able to use the small funnel to get the main body of the Ant Farm full, with a ridiculous amount of work (to get it compacted, which it needs to be for the ants to tunnel, you have to continually shake the sand down, try angle the funnel, and at the end, add only a tiny amount at a time). All of that could have been eliminated by having the filling hole at the top. At least there was enough sand included. The water tube has a blue stopper which was hard and too large; however, after soaking it, I was able to insert it into the tube. This doesn't come with ants; I'm not too sure how I'm going to get some of our local ones into the farm, but I'm sure I'll figure it out! (I have some test tubes, and I think I'll be able to use those to catch and store the ants.) There are no instructions about what to feed the ants; according to online sites, they should eat sugar or honey; we'll see.I will update this review after my Outdoor Science students use it. (Parents, teachers; be aware that you will certainly need to assemble this for your students.)
