Q: What is underneath the cushion? Is it more slats or a solid piece of wood? I'm more interested in a bench to put things than a seat.

It is a solid piece of plywood about 8mm thick set in a solid wood frame. With the cushion on top it is strong enough to sit on.

Q: What is the maximum weight capacity for each hook, please?

I don't know exact weight, but a couple of coats and rucksack on each hook - no problem. They are sturdy hooks and the unit seems quite stable

Hi, it is 100% stable.we have ours free standing in the hall way loaded full of shoes and about 10 coats/jackets and it’s is solid as a rock. I did however assemble some parts with wood glue, but I feel if you assemble it properly even without the glue it will be stable and strong.
