What do I do when I first get the item?

You simply plug it into the wall and turn the power on. It will then start charging and be available to use.

Can the item be used just as a power failure light?

Unfortunately on all models except for the 'Maxi' model the nightlights are active. However if you set the 'Maxi' model to OFF on the front slider switch this allows it to be used as a power failure light only.

How much power does it use?

All the models only use power as and when they need it. As it is LED and induction charged they hardly draw any power and will cost you next to nothing.

Does the nightlight features work outside of the cradle?

No, for all the nightlight features to be active the model will need to be in its charging cradle with the power turned ON. When the unit is outside of the cradle it is used as a torch.
