Depends on the acid. Hydrochloric, Sulfuric, Acetic, Oxalic, Hydrofluoric? You're probably fine. Nitric? Better not.

No, sadly they are not: I tried storing some cider in them, and it spoiled. I found that they can happily store vinegar....

Could this be used for petrol?

They're HDPE, which is the same material that plastic petrol containers are made from, so I would think it would work, but there are other regulations regarding storage (colour coding, labelling requirements) that mean that they're not really suitable.
