Great product, well priced, and easy to read and use
I own 5 vehicles and decided to purchaes this item to confirm what the mechanic may state as my tire tread condition. This item works well, is well built and feels good on your hands when using...not a cheap feel at all, which sometimes is important for tools. I went with JACO since I own a tire pressure gauge that has been a total workhorse , whihc I have owned for years. This JACO tire tread depth guag e is easy to use and the bright dial with color as measurements decrease was helpful. As soon as the item arrived I measured the tires on all 5 vehicles and it worked perfectly. I also had no issues with calibration. After eash measurement, I simply placed the gauge on a flat surface, or for speed and eas of use, just used my finger to level the plunger so it would read zero after each use. If this product is like my other JACO product, this will last for years and is another great automotive tool to have on hand.

Great product at a great price. Very easy to use and quick. Now I know how much wear there is instead of just guessing.

Quality analog depth gauge
This is a quality depth gauge that I bought for a friendโs birthday after purchasing a Safelife digital depth gauge on Amazon for myself. Compared to the Safelife digital gauge on Amazon, it has a better weight/feel and build quality. The Safelife gauge has a bottom platform width of 2-3/8โ which exceeds the Jaco by almost an inch meaning that for wide tire tread widths, the Jaco needs to be more centered properly over the tread to get a good reading. Other than this feature, the Jaco exceeds the Safelife in every other category. It has an easy to read analog dial with a resolution of 1/128โ, and produces more repeatable readings. When I zeroed out the Safelife and then made a measurement then re-zeroed out the gauge it was almost always off by 0.02 mm, which isnโt the end of the world but just comments on the measurement reliability. The analog vs digital reading reminds me of modern car speedometers (digital/analog) and watches. For me, I prefer an analog reading over digital but thatโs just me. Seems to me your brain can approximate an analog reading much faster over digital for a specific range and the Jaco is color coded for acceptable tread depths so you donโt need +/- 0.01 mm resolution to determine that your tread depth is within range.

better than the cheap sliding plastic versions
I picked up the JACO tire tread depth gauge and it's become one of those tools I didn't know I needed until I had it. Technically this is replacing a cheaper tread depth gauge I had for a year, but then it randomly came apart. The analog dial gives you an instant reading in 1/32" increments, and the color zones (green, yellow, red) make it obvious at a glance where your tires stand without any mental math. The dial face is large and clear enough that I've actually used it for eBay listings to show tread depth in photos. No batteries, no Bluetooth, no nonsense. Build quality feels solid and the dial action is smooth. It comes with a small leather pouch, which is worth having since this is more of a precision instrument than a shop beater. That's the one real caveat: drop it on concrete and you might throw off the needle calibration permanently. There's no visible damage when that happens, something just shifts internally and it won't zero out anymore. So treat it like the measuring tool it is, not like a wrench. For the price, it competes easily against the cheap plastic sliding gauges. Those technically work, but the small indicators are harder to read and you're always second-guessing yourself. This one I trust. I've used it across motorcycles, sedans, and lifted trucks with consistent results. If you want a quick, reliable way to stay ahead of tire wear and you're willing to store it somewhere it won't take a fall, it's an easy buy.

Great guage, well built. I like the large dial
I really like this guage. It seems well built and feels very solid in the hands. Accuracy seems to be spot on, and I like that it is very easy to read as well. I bought, and have used the cheaper ones, which work well, but more difficult to read. The large dial is very easy to read which I like. Also, due to the larger dial, it is much easier to see how close you are getting on treadwear and is a big plus over the small little ones. Handy little pouch as well to protect when sitting in a drawer or in tool case. I will say that it probalby wouldn't stand up well if dropped on the cement (due to glass cover), but not sure I'd trust any good guage if dropped! But it feels solid and is well built. Strongly recommended.
