Great, just like the rest of Neu!

I'll just say that I really like this album, a lot. It sounds pretty much perfect to me. I love all of the Neu! stuff and this is just as great, if a bit different. Some tracks, like "Drive," have a classic motorik beat that is very reminiscent of the first three Neu! albums. The guitar styling is different than how Rother might have played on those albums. The album itself sounds like Neu! after a decade of Rother's solo work and Dinger's work on four La Dusseldorf albums. If you listen to Rother's "Lust" and Dinger's "Neonindian," then you really shouldn't be surprised to hear some of the newer sounds and the vibe of this album. It's rather continuous of where Rother and Dinger were at during this time, musically. That said, it's strange they couldn't agree on releasing it then but I gather reasons other than musical approval had something to play in that regarding the personal and business dynamics between the band. That's a shame, but I'm so glad Rother was able to finally put an official mix of this work together. It is an improvement in sonic quality and cohesiveness over the (already good) version released in the '90s as "Neu! 4". (And I love the album art color scheme.)

Very enjoyable entry in the Neu! catalog

While not as innovative as the first three albums, Neu! 86 is still a very enjoyable, interesting album and any krautrock fan should own it. More reminiscent of the late 70s-early 80s output of the solo projects by the CAN members, this one relies much more on synthsizers and keyboards but still has that Rother/Dinger beat and guitar work. I like this one a lot and find it grows on me with each listen.
