What is the significance of 40gbps if the drive can only transfer at 2700mb/s? isn't only around 7% of 40gbps?

Drive transfer is 2700 MB/s (mega bytes/s), since 1 byte=8 bits so 2700 x 8= 21600 mb/s, which is more than 50% of 40 Gb/s Thunderbolt

Will it work with the new iPhone 15 Pro Max for recording video direct?

Unclear. I’ve ordered an iPhone Pro Max but cannot even find information about whether or not it will work at speed with Thunderbolt 4 cable. Apple only says that it is “compatible” while it mentions specifically other devices like MacBooks that would benefit with top transfer speeds up to 40GBps.

It’s my understanding that Apple’s Thunderbolt ports are backward compatible. So it should work. But you won’t get the full speed this drive is capable of delivering. This is a Thunderbolt 3 design.

Need to back up 500gb of 2012 MacBook Pro; would this be a good choice to do so? (No lightning/usbc port)

It wouldn’t, no. I had no luck using it with a USB-C to USB-A cable, not adapter. I tried several brands/kinds, but none worked. If I recall, TB 1 and 2 don’t offer power output, so you’re out of luck there as well. Though, if you want to spend an unreasonable amount of money on this, plugging the drive into a TB3 or 4 dock and connecting that dock to the laptop using a TB3 ->TB2 adapter may work.
