This set is gorgeous! The water paper is beautiful, and the writing side is very paper-like (some reusable practice papers feel too smooth, and don't provide the same resistance to your brush as rice paper does). The instruction booklet is nice. It is in Chinese, as expected, but you don't need to read it, because there are diagrams showing the types of strokes, and which direction you should push your brush to form the stroke (you should always feel as if you are pushing the brush, instead of pulling it. The stick of the brush should be vertical, and the point of the brush should be opposite the direction it is traveling!)You will notice that the brush is stiff and unusable upon arrival. This is to protect the brush. Take off the cover and soak the brush in warm water until the brush opens up. Do not try to force the brush hairs to bend, this is very bad for it. Once the brush has been opened, do not try to put it back into the cap ever again! The only way it will go in is if it is wet, and brushes should air dry. You can throw the cap out. If you use ink, make sure to wash the brush well after every use. Make sure the brush is completely dry before putting it away.The stick of the brush is a little light, which results in the balance of the brush being off when you write with it, but it's decent and is more than adequate for beginners.

This Chinese character writing kit is very well designed.I was very disappointed when first received it, since the package is so lousy that makes it almost like a roll of calendar packed in a very old/flimsy plastic bag. However I was surprised the design of the writing pad as it's just like a classic Chinese silk with lots of patterns on it.It's a pity that the writing guide is in Chinese, but still some examples to refer to for the practicing.
