Amazing sound, incredibly comfortable and light. Not 100% flat though so maybe best for general use
Hugely impressed with these. In the last 4 months I’ve been working my way through Koss headphones (ended up on KPH40 after having KSC75s, Porta Pros, KTXPRO1, UR42i and UR23), and I’ve been wanting a set of closed backs so I thought hey, why not try Koss. I’d seen the Pro4S mentioned in various places but I never really considered them. Didn’t feel the need to at the time. But I’m so so glad I did. Especially for the £68 I paid for Used: Good as new off Warhouse. With the Koss lifetime warrant I knew I could get a brand new set if there was something wrong with them.Their sound blows me away every time, the detail is brilliant. Not unpleasantly sibilant and just….too much, like the ATH MSR7 I had. But still enough detail to let you hear every single aspect of a track, it’s cliche but I’m literally hearing new things in tracks I’ve listened to 100’s of times over the years. People claim the KSC75’s are “detailed” but compared to these, the 75’s are maybe a 6-7/10 in terms of detail.I wanted a closed back set for gaming too, and I’ve tried these with a few games and they’re better than I could even have imagined. I play mostly single player games like Prey, Bioshock etc and these elevate those games hugely. Hearing every single creak of a floorboard like it’s right under your feet, hearing every drop of water or whatever else. And thanks to the tuning, everything is perfectly natural. A silent room sounds silent, not just a constant hum of noise like you get from a lot of headphones. These are incredibly well controlled and precise. I should say I had a set of X2HR for a while and these blow them out of the water. The bass on the Pro4S isn’t as much as on the X2HR but far better quality. And they have a surprising amount of sub bass which I didn’t expect, these go fairly low. Far far lower than any of the cheaper Koss variants, including the Porta ProIt’s a shame these don’t get more coverage, they’re perfect for gaming and music. Maybe they wouldn’t appeal to mega-bassheads but I think anyone who even remotely enjoys actually listening to their music rather than just ‘hearing noise that may or may not be a song they like’ will be very happy with these. Not to mention they’re incredibly light and comfortable, as well as the lifetime warranty where say in 5 years I accidentally break these, Koss will replace them no questions asked (with me sending them to them along with £5 for return postage)I literally couldn’t be happier with these, they’re far better than I actually expected. I’d set my expectations low due to the amount of cheaper Koss I’ve owned (many of which I thought were kinda middling). But these are just brilliant, I’ve found myself working through songs I haven’t heard in years solely just to hear it as it ‘actually’ sounds. I had no idea I’d been missing so much detail. Like Sad But True by Metallica I have on right now and I’d never heard the bass before, not this well articulated. Really well textured and impactful bass, with each instrument very well isolated too.I know a lot of people say Koss KSC75 are all you need, but honestly if you have the cash to spare (or find them used), I highly recommend the Pro4S. Far better detail, really incredible bass and just a perfect headphone for music and gaming, and anything really (except studio use ironically, due to a lil emphasis on bass and highs)

Surprisingly excellent reference quality headphones for critical listening.
I bought these as a pair of reference quality studio headphones, based on various reviews that I had read. I had never really heard of this brand before, even though they have been around for decades, so this was sort of a risky purchase from my perspective. The main purpose of these headphones, for me, is for critical listening of audio mixes, and I think that they do this job amazingly well! If a mix is great, it will sound amazing on these headphones, but if it isn't, they really show up the troublesome areas. For mixing/mastering this is incredibly handy as they will definitely assist you in getting a great mix that translates well to all devices (in my experience). The sound is very balanced and neutral, only reproducing what in there. If you are referencing a mix on this and it sounds great, you can be confident that it will sound great on just about anything! The build quality is also very nice, and the phones come in a rigid, zippable, canvas(?) case to keep them safe when travelling or not in use. The only negative that I have is the supplied cable, which is the 'curly' type and I found that it got in the way a bit and wasn't that practical. Thankfully it is detachable and can be easily replaced. Another cool feature is that you can attach the cable to either ear of the phones.

Good sound, could be more robust
Good sound, headband is a little creaky though comfortable, left ear input socket has gone a bit crackly, right side is OK, nice case.

Koss helped me find my music again.
Koss pro4s, I love these headphones, I'm realy rediscovering my music all over again, I cant rate this high enough. The sound is realy lifted and seperated and crisp, I allso like the fact you can plug the lead in to left or right headcan and the other one becomes a daisy chain for someone eles to plug in and join in to what your listning too, Just tryed that and no loss or cange for me.I did not want headphones that had exta base that would cange or dictate how i listern, I like to do that at souce. For me these fitted the reqoirement perfectly. So i have purchased two pairs.Plus TotallyGadgets who surplyed them where fist class to deal with [a thank you to Tyla] alovely change from a lot of firms apathy youget. Will use and recommend TotallyGadgets again 100%.

Though I am no audiophile, I think these are brilliant. Clear and neutral sounding to me and excellent quality.

Quality is good.
Sound nice but a little thin compared to some and be aware the ear cups are shallow, so anyone with big ears forget it..

Excessive upper mid range, not even close to neutral sounding.
I have had many pairs of headphones over many years, and have settled on Koss Porta Pro's as those whose sound is most like reality.I needed something that sat around my ears as the Porta Pro's are only comfortable for an hour or so, pushing on the cartlidge bit. I figured Koss would maintain a sound balance across it's products...wrong. But more than that. These headphones sound totally wrong, which is disappointing as I had high hopes for these. There is an elevation in the upper mid range, so vocals scream through the mix, and snare drums are deafening. Cymbals sound splashy - like a low bit rate MP3 (I'm listening to 192khz 24bit lossless recordings mainly, though I listen to Vinyl via my amp a lot as well - late at night). The bass extension is hard to hear because it is lost in the mix. Perhaps in isolation the bass sounds good, its just that I don't just listen to double bass on its own, but if I did I would feel like bunging a graphic equaliser in there to give it a bit of a boost. If you are looking for a neutral sounding headphone then this isn't it. My Step-Son has Audio-Technica ATH-M50X's which are much more neutral sounding. Try those instead, I think I may have to.

Very, very good in a lot of ways, but MAY need equalizer to balance the frequency response
UPDATED REVIEW: I've used these headphones for over a year now. After swapping out MP3 sources from a FIIO to Sony, I can see that the FIIO just couldn't drive these phones. The Sony sounded great, with the same MP3's the sound was full and balanced - no need to dink around with the equalizer. The review below was based on the FIIO as a source. These are really good sounding headphones. The quibbles about cords is still true but minor. 5 stars!I've bought many pairs of headphones and several pairs of Koss headphones before. I've always found Koss to provide excellent value.I've struggled to decide whether I want to give these headphones 3, 4 or 5 stars. Read on to see why.I use headphones for walking around mostly. My personal faves are the Koss PortaPros. They are super musical, neutral-ish in sound, comfy and really great value. They sit over your ear - which means they don't block out the ambient sound nor the cold. I generally like that I can hear the outside world. But in the cold Canadian winter, I need headphones that sound great and do double duty as ear muffs (keeping my ears warm).Life is too short for bad sound. So I bought a pair of these two months ago, based on Koss' reputation and the great reviews. The reviews were pretty accurate if a little too sunny. Here are my thoughts (as a critical listener):1. They are very comfortable headphones for several hours of listening (even with my big, fat head). Seriously, I got a big noggin, I doubt anyone would have trouble getting these to fit comfortably. The D-style ear cup, really is nice. They do a good job isolating you, which leads to incredible bass (more on that later).2. They style is a personal thing. I think they look great. A statement but NOT SHOUTING. I think they'll look good 10 years down the road too.3. They seem to be really well made and finished. They just do. As a bonus, they come with a nice case if that matters to you. I don't use it but it looks like it'd be useful for many.4. OK, let's listen - to me their sound is their most important criteria. I've taken a while to decide what I think of these cans, but I've decided that I kind of like them, with caveats. First they are exceptionally clear and distortion-free. The bass is tight, exceptionally deep and powerful, the mid-range is smooth while treble is nice. They seem to like a little volume. So why am I not enamored by these phones? They seem to have a consistent and significant upper-midrange emphasis. It can make them sound boxy, tinny and strident. My lesser expensive, and less refined, Koss headphones don't have this issue. On a simple, clean recording, it doesn't matter as much, but on over-produced rock or pop, it can be a pretty strident. Some reviewers have said that these headphones are so good that they expose the weaknesses of music production. I can see what they are saying but don't really agree. For me, the real solution is to dink around with the equalizer and tone down that part of the spectrum (normally the fourth slider of five in your custom equalizer setting). And to balance out their sound, you need to make quite a few adjustments. See the attached picture of the equalizer settings I needed to obtain the balance I receive flat with other headphones. There seems to be no negative side-effects of these adjustments. Once you do this, these phones really shine. The clarity, openness and detail really sparkle then too, they have a nice natural timbre then. They are a different kind of headphone than the Porta-pro or UR-40, etc which I run with the equalizer off. These other headphones are musical, if less than accurate than the Pro4S. After the equalization to balance the sound, the Pro4S is musical and exceptionally detailed. And they keep my ears are warm. One other thought from my experience. These phones came with a heavy coiled cord that plugs into the device and the other into the headphones (like an old-fashioned corded telephone cable from land-lines of the 1970's). Given that I (and many of you may) like to walkabout withe these headphones, the original coiled cord was a bother. It got caught in everything and tugged at the phones causing little shorts in the music when the cord pulled too hard. They're good headphones so I replaced that coiled cord with a simple 4' straight one from Amazon and it completely solved both problems. If Koss is listening, you might consider including a straight cable too or instead of the nice carrying case. It's just better ergonomics for the portable user. These are good value. The sound can be quite remarkable, but for me, they need to be equalized, quite a lot. I needed to change the cord too. I wasn't happy about having to make these changes, but the end result is outstanding!Be safe out there and rock on!

After a long journey, I've finally found my favorite closed-back
A lot of headphone critics will say that "professional" headphones aren't good for "home" use; but after using these headphones, I believe that's a bunch of bologna. These have an extraordinarily flat frequency response--right up there with the best of the professional sets (that cost, by the way, several times the price of these). Most who have an active interest in headphones would probably equate that to an overtly "sterile" experience. I have not found that to be the case in the slightest. I gladly use these every day, whether I'm listening critically, or just listening to music for fun. I couldn't be happier with them.Starting with the build-quality, they are very strong overall. The cups are expertly crafted in metal, all major pivoting points utilize metal components, and the headband--while conforming and twistable--feels built to last. I have absolutely no concerns with the long-term durability, but even if I did, Koss is extremely generous with their iconic lifetime warranty. I've used it several times in the replacing of the low-quality cable insulation on my Porta Pros, and have never been disappointed (though I really think Koss would save money by just giving he Porta Pros a higher-quality cable). Speaking of cables, the provided Pro4S cables are extremely durable. Given that they are professional-grade, they are long, coiled, and heavy. But, if they're too heavy or robust for your taste, they're easily removable--you can use whatever 3.5mm slim-jack cable you like. You can even plug them into whichever side you prefer. They do not, however, include a remote or microphone. Factor a microphone cable into the cost if that's a deal-breaker (I highly recommend the V-Moda BoomPro if you're using these for communication or gaming).Comfort is good to very-good. I generally prefer open-back over-ear headphones which allow an open, airy comfort (and sound) experience. These aren't quite up to that level of comfort (few closed-headphones are), but they're still comfortable enough to wear for hours at a time. Koss made a big deal about their D-profile earcups. In truth, I don't know if it's really that much better than the standard oval profiles; but they are certainly not worse. They fit well, are soft leatherette, and exhibit a proper amount of force that is neither leaky nor overbearing (and for the record, I have a large head). You probably won't forget you're wearing them (like you can with well-designed open-back, airy headphones), but you likely won't be discomforted by their presence.Aesthetically, they look better in person than they do in photos. They straddle a sublime balance of professional, almost industrial look with high-quality luxury appearance. They are a truly nice-looking headphone. Great use of accents, materials, and shapes.Sound is where they score the real points with me (other than their overall outstanding value). Per near unanimous recommendation, I was previously using Meze 99 Classics which are geared toward the typical home user with a luxury mindset. And they were very luxurious in their materials and design. But the sound quality was downright sloppy and fatiguing to my taste. These Koss, on the other hand, seem very accurate and tight with a smooth sound character that lends itself well to extended listening sessions. And any frequency that you can possibly hear? These will reproduce them in a strong, levelled manner with meticulous detail. Some critic reviews claimed that they have a somewhat recessed vocal range, but that minor truth adds to their overall pleasant feel. They don't have an excessive midrange presence that a lot of "flat" headphones exhibit. It is important to note, though, that they don't have that U-shaped response curve that some of the more popular home user headphones have, either. I'd describe them as more appropriately balanced than most headphones I've used. I consider it a non-issue. Almost a pro, in fact. Going back to the "sterile" comment, these are definitely not sterile. They are downright lively in my opinion. I haven't listened to any genre of music that I didn't think these were apt at playing. Live/acoustic music? Wonderfully spacious for a closed-back. Bass-heavy hip-hop or electronic? Bring it on! Metal? Tight and energetic. Rock and pop? Clean and discrete. I am absolutely floored with their performance across all music types. It's funny how the frequency response spectrum tells so little of how a headphone will actually sound. While these are indeed accurate headphones, they can not be described as "boring"--just genuinely enjoyable, with a knack for critical detail and balance. There is one thing that I'd want to be of note to people using them for home use: while they're easier to drive than most pro-grade headphones, they still aren't quite as easy as traditional-use headphones. Your tablet and phone can still drive them to satisfying levels, but they're not quite as sensitive as some people are used to. At least to those who are used to damaging their hearing at extremely high levels, anyways (I reluctantly raise my hand). In conclusion, there was a six-month period where I bought seven highly-acclaimed closed-back headphones in the $200-400 msrp range (largely per Innerfidelity's Wall of Fame), none of which did I see as suitable long-term solutions. In a moment of tired desperation, I decided that Koss has always been great to me, I should try their Pro4S despite Tyll's lukewarm reaction. I am so glad I made that decision. I have had absolutely no desire to shop for other headphones in the six months since. My previous-choice Mezes were put up for sale. I am DONE. And I think anyone reading this review should give these a try, too. You could save a lot of money versus some less-impressive high-cache brands that may disappoint you the same way they disappointed me. These are a no-brainer.

Highly Recommended
My previous headphones were the iconic Koss Pro4AA which I regarded as having great audio quality. But a particular issue was the catalyst for an upgrade (I don't know how old they are as I bought them secondhand). I decided to go with these as I have had a great experience with Koss headphones so far, and I have not been disappointed this time either.Firstly, compared with the Pro4AA, the Pro4S are far more comfortable to wear. They are considerably lighter in weight, and the ear cushions are notably more comfortable - although I don't know how old the cushions are on my Pro4AA, so maybe that is a factor; having said that, there feels like there is way more space inside the cups for my ears and that my ears and head aren't being excessively squeezed by the tight pressure of the headset.Secondly, the Pro4S is far more convenient to transport. They fold down in a way that the Pro4AA simply cannot and they come with a decent protective case; it was wonderful to be able to easily pack my headphones in my luggage when I travelled recently; with the Pro4AA model I simply wouldn't bring them travelling but I also wasn't happy not having them at certain times when I didn't have a reasonable set of headphones available. The headphone case itself is quite good in design and seems well-made so far. There is a zip-up pocket inside for the detachable cable and the included 1/4" adapter. Anyway, I have greatly appreciated having the case that is included and generally store the headset in it when not in use.Thirdly, the audio quality of the headphones is in my opinion superior to the Pro4AA. The bass response seems a bit stronger and the clarity of sound is noticeably sharper. But having bought the Pro4AA second-hand and not knowing its age, it's possible that they don't provide the fairest comparison; nonetheless, there is no denying the excellent quality of the audio of the Pro4S. I have sampled various types of music and find these to be very versatile headphones.I note that while they are simple in design, there is a certain elegance in their simplicity. The headset has an appearance of quality design and, while surely not as solid as the Pro4AA offering, seems to be of a reasonable quality of construction too.Overall, I highly recommend these headphones, especially given Koss' lifetime warranty.
