Yes, you can use finely ground leaves and spices. The mesh is almost undetectable. This is really the best strainer I have ever used.

Is this microwave safe, if I make tea directly in the microwave?

You cannot put ANY TYPE of metal inside the microwave. I suggest you warm up your water first remove from the microwave and then add your looseleaf tea and let it step on the counter.
