Thought it might be a substitute for a Domino - it's not
I'm sure that like many, I'd like to have a Festool Domino, but the high cost keeps me from buying one...the Festool is quite literally ten times the price of this Igooo dual-spindle jointer, and I'm not sure I'd use it enough to justify the expense. The basic idea is fine...dowels are better than biscuits and, done properly, a good dowel joint is probably nearly as strong as a domino joint. A proper dowel joint takes longer and requires more precision, but otherwise, dowels are suitable for the work I do. I've used various doweling jigs in the past, and I had hoped that this Igooo unit would be a step above, but that's not really what I found.First and foremost, the materials and construction quality of this device are somewhat lacking. In mine, there's just enough "slop" in the various controls that it's not easy to get a really precise joint time after time. The built-in fence isn't solidly secured, so it's free to flex and twist, resulting in slightly misaligned dowels. I've spent hours trying to adjust and align the various parts, only to have them almost immediately work out of square again. There are a few good reviews of these types of low-cost dual-spindle doweling machines on YouTube and I'd encourage you to seek them out. Most are fairly negative, but much of what they point out is spot-on true. I knew as much, and I hoped somehow mine would be better...it's not.Out of 24 joints I made with the Igooo on a test project, I found that only 4 were what I'd call "spot on". The rest varied, but on average, I'd say that the error is about 1/16" inch. Sometimes, that's okay - sometimes, it's not. I found that the errors are worst in hardwoods. On both cherry and hard maple, I found significantly worse errors than in soft pine.In the end, I have to admit that the Igooo is really no better than a good manual doweling jig. Of course, the best jig I have is the one made by Jessem - and it's more expensive than this Igooo, so perhaps that's to be expected. If you need something for occasional use and don't require spot-on accuracy in your work, then the Igooo represents a significant bargain. If you're looking for a precision solution that gives you perfect joinery all the time, then sadly, I would recommend looking elsewhere.
