NCE Secrets Study Guide: NCE Exam Review for the National Counselor Examination

I finished my masters program classes in mid April 2020. I began studying at the end of April 2020 and took the NCE at the end of June 2020. The studying process I did was either read/memorize 10 pages of this book each day or study for 2 hours (I often found myself finishing the 10 pages).While this book does cover a lot of relevant material, the weakness of this book is that the material covered is not as detailed as other study resources you will find. I found that I recognized some concepts already but noticed that a lot of info was not included in this resource. My fix for this was to read the concepts in my other textbooks that I felt were not emphasized within this book, however, I feel that a good resource should not have to make you do this. I'd say the best part of this book was the two practice tests and the answer key that explains why the correct choice is correct. I feel that the practice questions in this book were somewhat similar to how they were presented on the actual test.For someone that did well in their masters program but never considered myself to be exceptionally intelligent, but rather hardworking, I did fairly well on both practice tests (150/200 and 152/200). This book is about 180 pages, the other 120 are for the practice tests and answer key. I actually went through this book about 3x before reading an older study resource from 2014 that my professor gave me (Dr. Arthur's National Counselor Examination Study Guide; it is a red book with about 650 pages). I studied both that resource (it is highly detailed but because it is 6 years old, some of the info may be dated) and this NCE secrets book and was able to PASS my first time. As you can imagine, the actual NCE was more challenging than the practice tests I took.And if you've made it this far in my review, I just want to say that I do get fairly anxious for big assignments or large standardized tests. If you are the same, let me be the one to say that you CAN pass this test as long as you put the work into studying. It is a challenging test but it is definitely doable. There is an extremely high pass rate and a large room for getting questions incorrect on this test. Staying disciplined in your studying is probably the hardest part in this endeavor, but try to keep at it a little bit each day. You will do great!And there were a few days where I felt lazy and didn't do any studying. That is okay! We're all human and sometimes, we just don't want to study.

I bought this book with 3 weeks left to study for the NCE. I also bought the Rosenthal Encyclopedia and practice tests from the makers of this book. I made notecards from all the info In this book and took the practice test the night before the test. I passed with flying colors! I briefly glanced at the Rosenthal encyclopedia the night before. It has great information and questions, but the size of the book itself was overwhelming for me. This book skipped the fluff, was easy to follow and has simple explanations. I pretty much used this book as a stand alone study guide and only glanced at the others because I spent so much money on them. I highly recommend this as a study guide for the NCE!

I'm a Dr. of Counseling Psychology wanting to take the NCE so I can practice while I study for the EPPP. I read many reviews of products to prepare for the NCE and purchased this one 4 weeks prior to exam. I read this study guide cover to cover, noted many typos, and felt confused by the disorganized format. Although the chapters are broken down into sections similar to the test, the content within each chapter was difficult to follow as I created an outline. I also took both practice tests (and did terrible!) but it was do-or-die and I went to the exam. I passed, thank goodness, but not because of this waste of money. Of the 400 practice questions, zero were on the exam. I also don't recall ANY of the vocabulary words on the exam (other than the obvious dependent vs independent variable stuff) I honestly can't say that anything from the prep materials was helpful. If anything, it was confusing. I personally didn't find the videos helpful either (you get access codes to 3-5 min clips throughout the guide). There wasn't enough time to buy something else, so I can't point you in another direction, but I'd pass on this one.

The study material is great, as there are some concepts that the book points out that was not brought up during my master’s course work. I like how it is laid out and I can identify where I need to study more and what I already know.

I recently purchase the NCE Secrets Study Guide. I have just began reading the information in the manual. I was exceptional impressed by the first couple of pages that covered the secret keys to studying. The suggested study styles has helped me to increase my probability of passing the exam. I also found the practice test, along with a detail explanation of the correct answers helpful. I appreciated that the correct answer page provided answers to the question along with a explanation of the other choices that were incorrect; this provided me with the opportunity to compare answers and understand why my choice might have been incorrect. Overall the book appears to cover all of the topics that are found on the NCE example. I would say that if I had to rate the material at this early stage in my study, I would give it a 4. I will be glad to re-evaluate the material once I complete the exam.

This book was easy to read & great for review. I passed my test first try & didn't really study other than flipping thru this book. If you're someone who plans to really study for this exam, I definitely recommend this book because it's an easy way to get a lot of info in a short amount of time!

The product that I purchased was the "NCE Secrets Study Guide Your Key to Exam Success"I would rate this product a 4. The overall material content was great!I gave the product a 4 because it would have been nice to include a practice test after each section was introduced. It would be helpful to include study questions relating to what was read in each section.There was a lot of materiel to read through before you actually get to the practice exam.
