Double Crossed
While this film shows Barry Seal as a not too bright person, those who lived that era know the film 'Double Crossed' with Dennis Hooper playing Barry Seal was more spot on. Barry was a smuggler and an adventurer and he broke laws, but he was groomed, used and turned out by the US government. The film 'America Made' is entertaining but based on story is not the same as historically correct.

Mena to Medellin
I didn't realize that this film was even made until I saw an article in Variety about it.. I distinctly recall the day that Mr. Seal was assassinated and mentioning to my boss about how this story would probably be wiped from the books. Apparently, others felt the same way I do. This film was denied by the Chinese government. Though they love their Mr. Cruise, Chinese officials did not want the masses seeing him in a glorified negative light. A substantial amount of negative press kept me from watching "American Made" initially. The story line is somewhat accurate, though some parts are suppressed for the sake of brevity. Seal did not walk away from TWA, but was fired after he made a failed attempt to smuggle plastique into Mexico. He was smuggling drugs before he embedded with the firm and the DEA. His work was part of a plea bargain out of a ten year stretch in Federal prison. I enjoyed this film because it doesn't portray Seal as an off the hook cokehead. The drug business employs a wide array of occupations to be an industry. The users, are as Mongo would say, "Pawns in game of life". Two people died during the making of "American Made". It has been reported that one of the pilots was not properly prepared to fly the Piper, and that unfamiliarity with the terrain and bad weather were major factors in the crash. Toss in a typical film schedule, and the prescription for disaster is compounded. The music was out of sync as a life soundtrack for the Barry Seal character. One clip in the soundtrack, is a direct lift from Led Zeppelin's "Communication Breakdown". Barry was probably more of a Jim Croce kind of guy, but that's irrelevant. Great film, Great Actor(s). I've always liked Tom Cruise. He strikes me as a decent guy. If you ever wondered how a well known politician's brother living in rural America, became dependent on blue flake cocaine.. well.. you can figure it out now. "Chi Chi.. get the Yayo.." Loved the film
