Our garden is invaded at night by fallow deer which damage a wide variety of plants and make vegetable gardening impossible. We have cameras but watching with them all night was not an option. We installed these passive infrared (PIR) detectors at strategic points to alert us to our intruders with antlers. The PIRs detect up to 5 or 6 metres away and communicate to the base station alarm over a distance of 12-15m, which significantly better than Bluetooth and WiFi systems. This matters because we are guarding nearly half an acre of garden and the deer are good at sneaking into the far corners. The only limitation is that all the PIRs trigger the same alarm response so which one was triggered is not known. Not a problem though, because the deer are pretty hard to miss once we know they’ve arrived! We actually have two sets of alarms, i.e. two base units and their PIRs. Being ‘dumb’ devices they are uncomplicated, working seamlessly with each other. Assembly is easy, C batteries in the base units with an optional socket for powering with a plug in power unit, PP3 batteries for the PIRs. We have been running these devices for a few weeks on the batteries with no replacements so far. Wall mounting screws are supplied and tiny screws for the battery panels (one kit lacked these but I had plenty in the shed anyway). ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 2 yr update - All in all a good product, however I have had a few faults, but would buy again. *by R***R on 18 December 2019* After an attempted burglary in June we set about improving the security of our rural home. CCTV, new snap/bump/pick proof euro cylinder locks and most importantly a system for alerting us if someone was wandering around our property. Items arrive well packed and are a doddle to set up, just install the batteries (you'll need a watch size screwdriver), pop a screw in the surface you want to mount the PIR to, turn on the receiver and boom it works. I bought a receiver and two sensors initially but now have 9 sensors around the house running to 3 receivers to make sure that one picks up the signal. In practice however, the range is very impressive. There is signal degradation through walls etc, but from the window in our bedroom to our gate, around 60 meters, the sensor picks it up most of the time. Alarm volume is adjustable to high and low, high is loud enough to wake you up if you're in the same room and low is just right to alert you in the day to visitors. However, there are some bad points. I've had many false alarms from two of the sensors which in the end I discarded, and finding which sensors they were was a long process (removing batteries from others to test one by one). With regards to battery life, it's actually pretty good you'd probably get 4 months on the sensors and 1 year plus on the receiver with decent batteries. Note, if the light stays on on a sensor, its low on batteries. After 6 months, it should be noted the battery cover screws have started to corrode and perhaps a stainless steel screw would be more appropriate. I noticed there are two type of PIR, some with the LED mounted behind the plastic moulding and some with LED mounted through the plastic moulding. Which is interesting. Of the four receivers I have one arrived with a faulty siren, but to be honest I only needed three so it was no great shakes. It would be nice if 4vwin sold replacement sensors on their own and I'll ask the question here. There is no real waterproofing on the mount plate or the battery cover. I'm not sure if that is what caused the faults with the 2 PIR's or not but it is worth noting. They are a bright white and quite obvious, to make them more camouflaged I've pained a few in estate green paint (which has since washed off a bit but still works). This hasn't affected the range but when hung on a tree somewhere you can barely see them. Perhaps 4vwin could produce a woodland/garden version with a mix of green/brown? When placing your sensors it took a few attempts to get it right as we're covering a huge open rural house but I think we are about there now. Plan your intruder entry points, cover doors, patios, gates etc. I'd love to give this product 5 stars but I just cant.
