The lids are superfluous really even if you left them outside the only animal skinny enough would be a juvenile ant. They look smart and are adequate. Initially I gave this 3 stars.FOLLOW-UP - I didn't complain to the company or request a replacement as I thought the one hole in the pepper pot was an inherent designrather than a product fault. To my surprise and delight I received a charming apology and a replacement in the post.
