Genuinely makes a difference if you have air flow.
I was using an Intel server class NVMe which happens to be 22110 rather than 2280 (eg 110mm rather than the standard 80) and as it’s designed for high air flow server chassis, it had a nasty habit of cooking if fans were turned down. Adding a heat sink allowed me to keep fans running lower and drop this from 60-70c to 24c as I type this on a hot day, more importantly it’s not logged a thermal shutdown since.
