The World of the Diabetic Pet
Just to review caring for a diabetic pet (dog or cat ), it is expensive ! Vet bills, ketoacidosis complications, diet food, test kits, blindness in dogs and generally the stress and hope everything your doing is in the best interest of your pet.My female Great Dane, Bella, has been my companion for 9 1/2 years. She was the smartest puppy Dane I ever owned and is still a princess of a dog. About 8 months ago, I took her to the Vet because she was losing weight and peeing the bed at night. Voila ! Blood glucose was 700 +, potassium 7--diagnosis: DIABETIC KETOACIDOSIS.Bella was referred to Ethos vet clinic and the diabetic KA was initially treated and she was then transferred to another Ethos Hospital for intensive care. After scans of Pancreas and multiple consults, the VET BILL totaled $ 13,000. This is how much and more, I love this dog.Her routine is now predictable for every day. Up at 6:30 AM for glucose check, food prep and recording of calorie intake, warming her food, feeding, out for peepoop, and injection of insulin ( Levemir ). Then, sleeping. Most of her diabetic life is sleeping. When she needs peepoop, she always alerts me, never messing in the house.Bella also has cataracts and is functionally blind. So common in diabetic dogs. She must have SONAR because she navigates the house and outdoors without problems. Amazing to watch.Excuse my emotional prologue for what I want to advise. If you love your diabetic pet, you can expect any and all of the proceeding. Your dog NEVER gave up on you, they did not ask for this disease, you must not abandon them in their senior years. I know Bella will someday suffer a complication of her diabetes that will begin the final days, but our whole family never quit loving her. We never gave up.Now, for test strips. Yep, they are expensive. The Alpha TRAC 2 is an amazing device. Just imagine the engineering that created a small handheld device and the magic of a tiny test strip? Just awesome. How else are you going to measure your pet's glucose? Really? The technique of operating the TRAC 2 requires paying attention to sampling. Getting a blood sample is not the easiest task. Whoa, cats...., on the other hand, dogs are a little easier. Dogs have a hallock nubbin on their foreleg that is easy to puncture and does not seem to be overly sensitive. Tolerated very well. Using a 28 ga. lancet produces a tiny blood "ball" that is easy to sample. For the TRAC 2, use only one edge of the twin sample area or it will not work. Also, be careful handling the unit and do NOT touch C or M while sampling. Remember to set the code on the unit to match the code on the test strip bottle. Otherwise using the TRAC 2 is a no- brainer.Additionally, if you own a large dog, pet insurance is a must. Bella was not the only medical emergency I had last year...a month before, my male Great Dane "bloated" ..... another $ 5000. Whew, ! Own a Great Dane...get a gastropexy... mortality is 50% or greater and it is nearly totally avoidable.Another day,....just huggin' my dogs.

Excellent product
I’ve used these before for my diabetic dog and was very helpful in managing his condition. Unfortunately, we had to allow our dog to cross the Rainbow Bridge before I received them for conditions other than his diabetes. The vendor was very accommodating during our loss and allowed us to return them without any hassles. Top notch company and very understanding during this difficult time!!!

The strips can be wrong- test again if it doesn’t line up with previous readings
Very upset- this morning I tested my animal & the meter showed “LO”, never had that before & have been totally happy with using them but today with that reading it’s a good thing I didn’t act accordingly like I normally do with the insulin dose or not with the # the meter shows- I took it again with a new strip- 295 this time -took it again & it was 305, so gave him the insulin accordingly! I’ve been doing this for 11 yrs with this cat & my vet says I should be in the Guinness Book of Records as she’s never had an animal with Diabetes live more than 3-4 yrs. I test 3 times a day but dose him every 12 hrs . I totally rely on the meter & the strips, to be correct as his life depends on it & my knowledge when it’s questionable. Not all have my experience so that’s why I’m letting you know about this faulty strip! I’m not looking for a refund, just want people to know to re-test if it’s a number you’ve not experienced as it’s a matter of life & death with an insulin dose given because of a wrong reading. Thank you & keep your animal safe- too high is better than too low! Remember that!

For pets these strips work the best, but hard to find for a good price
If you have a diabetic pet, you know the struggle and cost of it. A human machine needs too much blood to get a good reading and that's what's nice about these Alphatrak strips, they get by with the tiniest of blood drops. But I live in Canada where it's impossible to find these locally for a reasonable price. I was shocked to see how much affordable they are in the USA, but I hope the seller can re-evaluate their shipping method for something faster or maybe qualify for Prime shipping somehow.

Accurate but expensive
I was using the generic strips before they went off the market. I was forced to buy these very pricey ones, but I do feel they are more accurate than the others that tended to run as much as 75-100 points low and gave me a false sense that my dog was doing better than she really was. It's tough to take the $51 price tag for 50 strips. Her monthly cost between these, the hills science diet dog food, her expensive Vetsulin, syringes and lancets is about $200. It would be nice if some of this stuff wasn't so high. Isabelle is my 12 1/2 year old diabetic Yorkie-poo and I'll skip a meal or 1000 to keep her with me. ❤️

Too Expensive
A good product but it costs as much as the kit. I bought the whole other kit, Pet Control HQ for 64.99 at Amazon after I realised the cost.

Sensitive stip
Very sensitive strip, if you struggle with getting a large sample of blood.

Elles arrivent rapidement
