Good story

Personally I didn't find the strange ending others have mentioned. Unlikely spoiler alert, the main character is gay. The subsequent story would be, if he accepts this or surpresses it. I think the lead actor portrays his conflict very well, and the ambiguity is evident. Certainly a good film for anyone interested in LGBT storylines.

Very depressing film. Beautiful lad struggling to come to terms with being gay. But there is no resolution. We end up more or less where we started off. So why did I give it 5 stars? It's very atmospheric, very realistic, and beautifully filmed. It's only the story that's lacking.

Watchable and well acted by the lead actor, however like other reviews have said the plot is quite thin and the ending is disappointing and unresolved, still worth a watch though.

The physical DVD product quality met my expectations. The film was excellent. The subject is relevant and current.

Very sexy guy but the story is so good that it overshadows the erotic parts. I found the acting to be good and the lead is very natural. A sad story.

I think it just might be. Gripping, often uncomfortable stuff. Even the ending didn't bother me as much as the other reviewers.

Jerky narrative, some scenes were so dark that I couldn't make out what was going on, & the ending leaves you in the air. I found the main character, Frankie, unsympathetic, though he was good-looking.

SUPERB MOVIE about teens' self-assertion and peers pressure, WITH AN AMAZING PERFORMANCE BY THE EXCELLENT YOUNG BRITISH ACTOR HARRIS DICKINSON! This movie gives something to think about for those gay young men who struggle with their self-acceptance and who strive to find their place under the sun in our society. What makes it a 'MUST SEE' is the fact it's very well produced with nice-looking and credible actors.

Ich habe diesen Film gestern auf DVD angeschaut und bin überwältigt. Dieser Film ist ein unverfälschtes, dabei in traumartige Bilder und Musik gefasstes, Kunstwerk. Aber SEHR deprimierend. Es gibt keinerlei Auflösung der Konflikte der Hauptperson Frankie, absolut nichts versöhnliches. Er ist ein sanfter, ruhiger Typ und sieht auch noch wirklich sehr gut aus. Es gibt bis auf eine Szene nicht einen einzigen Moment, wo Frankie glücklich zu sein scheint, er ist einsam. Und dieses Gefühl von Einsamkeit und Melancholie kollidiert dann auch immer mit den schönen bunten Bildern eines Vergnügungsparks und dem allwöchentlich abgefeuerten Feuerwerk. Er lebt in eher armen Verhältnissen, geht anscheinend weder zur Schule noch arbeiten. Er hängt täglich mit seinen Kumpels am Strand oder im Vergnügungspark von Coney Island ab. Er ist schwul, aber keiner darf es wissen. Abends hängt er vor dem Computer und chattet mit älteren schwulen Männern und trifft sich dann auch mit ihnen. Älter, weil diese wahrscheinlich niemanden von seinen Leuten kennen. Er lebt in zwei Welten die er nicht übereinander bekommt und als sich diese beiden Welten dann doch treffen, kommt es zu folgenschweren Entscheidungen. Ein Coming Out ist auch heute noch alles andere als einfach, gerade dann wenn jemand auch noch in einer Welt des Hypermachismo aufwächst. Irgendwie möchte man diesem Kerl immer einen Schubs geben. Ich habe mit ihm gelitten. Ich finde den Film total UNTERbewertet, wenn man Portale wie IMDB oder Rotten Tomatoes anguckt. LGBT-basierte Filme müssen heute wohl immer eine positive Message haben, sonst haben sie keinen Erfolg. Dabei ist Frankie in seiner Situation nicht der einzige, der sich so schwer tut mit allem.Der Engländer Harris Dickinson spielt den innerlich zerrissenen Frankie phänomenal und ganz natürlich, ohne jede Scham aber doch wohl auch so überzeugend amerikanisch, dass bei einer Pressevorführung ein Raunen durch die Menge ging, als seine Nationalität erwähnt wurde. Seine Kumpels wurden wohl wirklich vom Strand weg gecastet, das sind die echten Beach Rats. Sehr interessante Gesichter. Dazu kommt noch Madeline Weinstein als seine immer wieder hingehaltene und betrogene Freundin, die wirklich toll spielt, auch mit ihr leidet man mit und zuguter letzt Kate Hodge als seine liebevolle Mutter. Unbedingt anschauen!
