Q: Does the color fade quickly? Is there a way to prevent or slow fading?

The colors will start to fade after a few months in the Florida Sun (where I am) I love these lights but even after getting a replacement set for a defective flower, I still have problems. Some will stay on bright all night long, others will not light or go very dim shortly after dark, even with new batteries. For the reasonable price though, I'd advise you to take a chance with them. Customer service is excellent if there's a problem. Hope this helps you decide.
