Nostalgic GameCube-Style Upgrade That Showcases My Mod — But Not for the Faint of Heart
I bought the eXtremeRate Clear Black replacement shell to give my Nintendo Switch Lite a unique, retro Nintendo look — and to proudly show off the modchip I installed. If you’re a fan of transparent electronics (think late-90s/early-2000s Game Boy Color or Atomic Purple controllers), this shell nails the vibe. Difficulty: High — the product description isn’t exaggerating. This is a full disassembly job. Expect 2 hours if you’re experienced, longer if you’re not. Tools Included: Comes with both Y00 and Phillips screwdrivers, a full set of screws, and even a tempered glass screen protector. Tips: Watch an install video first — I paused and replayed multiple times. Use a heat gun or hair dryer on low to remove the screen; too much heat could damage the digitizer. Keep screws organized — there are many sizes. Tweezers make reassembly easier than fingers. Shell Material: Durable ABS plastic that feels solid once assembled. Transparency: Clear enough to see the internals (and in my case, the modchip) but slightly smoky — not perfectly crystal-clear. Buttons: The colored A/B/X/Y buttons are a great GameCube throwback. Tactile feel is similar to OEM, though slightly stiffer at first. Nostalgic Nintendo aesthetic — the colored buttons against the dark transparent shell pop nicely. Back side perfectly shows off my custom work without looking cheap or gimmicky. Matte finish means fewer fingerprints than glossy shells. Pros Unique, premium look that stands out from stock designs. Solid construction; no creaks or misalignments after reassembly. Includes quality extras like a tempered glass screen protector. Perfect for showcasing internal mods. Final Verdict If you’re comfortable tearing down your Switch Lite and want something unique, the eXtremeRate Clear Black shell delivers both nostalgia and personality. This isn’t a quick cosmetic mod — it’s a project. But the result feels worth the effort. Rating: ★★★★★ (5/5) Who It’s For: Modders, retro-Nintendo fans, and anyone who wants their handheld to stand out. Who Should Skip: Anyone unwilling to do a full teardown or new to console repair.

Full disassembly required
so the case itself is pretty light kinda thin but doesn’t feel cheap imo. if you look super close I mean really close you can see how the case is slightly misaligned but honestly for 20 bucks it’s nice. Yes it’s cheap but prepare to sit down for about 2 hours. I saw tons of people recommend to use different screwdrivers than the ones included so I did and overall the outcome is sick. The case looks so good once finished. My ZR button was sticky at first but after time of messing with it it’s now working fine. Watch a YouTube vid, take your time and everything should turn out okay.

Good, but don't bother if you're a perfectionist
As you can see from the pictures, the finished product is simply beautiful. My shells are Glacier blue and my lite is grey. I love how the shell is semi-translucent instead of clear to avoid fingerprints and obvious scratching. The process was relatively straightforward coming from someone who is very familiar with taking apart electronics, but with patience (especially with the display removal) I would say this can be done by anyone with a steady hand. The unfortunate truth about these shells is that they just don't fit quite like the oem parts do, causing issues not related to cosmetics, however the fit is slightly imperfect on the bottom near the speaker ports. The system creaks and feels less sturdy than than my unmodified lite I can directly compare it to. For example, leaving the system on my table overnight then picking it up in the morning creates lots of popping and creaking sounds, and I can feel the system "settling" as I pick it up. The chassis just feels a bit cheap with these shells. I know the lite is a relatively inexpensive system, but if you ask me the build quality of an unmodified lite without any QC issues is genuinely quite good, better than the original switch. Some buttons do feel slightly different from stock, like the D-pad. I've tried resettling it a couple times, but it still feels crunchy and mushy with almost every down or right press. There is a bit more play in the ABXY, +, and - buttons as well. ZL and ZR feel and sound terrible if you decide to use the included clear assemblies ZL and ZR snap into, so you must use the original ones that came with your console. Mine is gray, so not an issue. Even using the two original parts, ZL and ZR feel slightly less responsive than stock. These shells really do look awesome and they fit very well for the most part, but if you value oem build quality and button feel, you should probably stay away from any mods like this.

Fit awesome! Quality 5 star
I'm really impressed with this shell. The emerald green color looks stunning in person — even better than in the photos. The material feels solid, durable, and premium, not cheap at all. Everything fits perfectly on my Switch Lite, and the finish is super smooth. If you want to give your console a fresh, high-end look, this is 100% worth it. Highly recommended!

Not too big of a challenge, but you'll need a heat gun...
...or a very powerful blow-dryer when it comes time to detach the screen from the front of your original shell. Be aware, too, that the person in the how-to video doesn't properly disconnect the battery until late in the process and you should ideally be disconnecting the battery before anything else. The quality of the plastic is pretty good and everything fits together nicely. It feels nice and solid in your hands, too. The process took me about 3 hours all together, which included swapping out the original joysticks for hall effect sticks. On that note, the whole reason I was popping my lite open in the first place was to replace my sticks after the left one started drifting, but I'm glad I decided to go through with the full housing replacement, because the result looks sick. If you have the time to commit to it, it's definitely less intimidating of a modding process than GBA SP or DSLite, at least in my experience.

The shell itself is high quality, looks good and feels good. The screwdrivers which came with it weren’t amazing, but at least they added them, and the screen protector is good, but I did it wrong which is on my part as I got dust under it… What I really wanna highlight is the absolutely brilliant instructional video. So simple, to the point and no waffle, there could have been no text and I’d still understand it. Great product. 10/10!
