Could I use lamp/torch fluid instead of gasoline? Using gasoline is a bad idea.

Any liquid that burns can be used in these.  Zippo type lighter fluid is obviously the best to use, but if you are in a survival situation you might not have that luxury.  While gasoline is one of the last fuels I would use, it will not explode.  Gasoline must be mixed with air before it becomes combustible. The minuscule amount of gasoline held in these lighters is not particularly dangerous. If you don’t know how to safely handle combustible liquids you should probably avoid this type of lighter altogether.

A friend bough me these and after using them a few times I nolonger have the string and cant get ut ti light again. Anyone else have this problem?

Yes, but you can replace the wick very easily. Go to YouTube and watch a demonstration at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9y1cJYnu82I. The video is on the channel for SurvivalKingK1 in case the link I pasted does not work. I think the video does a better job of describing how to replace the wick than I could stumble through with a lengthy explanation. I have these lighters in every vehicle, our bug out backpacks that all family members have, and I think they are absolutely necessary to have because of their multiple light capability. You know, like when you get stuck in an abandoned mine shaft, instead of the pesky wooden match that will burn your fingers after a few seconds of light, this lighter will allow you to have light long enough to find the ax murderer who has been laying in wait for just such an occasion (kidding of course). Now, where to buy a wick of this small size is anyone's guess, but I use the wick that can be purchased at any Wal-Mart that fits typical outdoor Tiki Torches. You can unwind a strand from one of those to use as the replacement for your survival lighter. Good luck!

The description says to add fuel to the match before striking, does the container not contain fuel already?

The container does NOT contain fuel when it arrives at your door. You must add lighter fluid, the type sold at virtually every convenience store on the planet for probably less than $2. Simply follow the directions for filling the chamber which if memory serves me correct, you simply fill from the bottom by prying open the bottom and saturating the interior chamber with the lighter fluid. I think that it is a safety feature, instead of having a lot of liquid lighter fluid in the chamber, the lighter fluid you add soaks some absorbent material that lines the inner chamber and keeps the wick ready to go when you need a flame. This is the best survival source of fire I have in my inventory hands down! You know how in scary movies when the victim's light a match to see in the pitch dark, but the flame burns out quickly and the person is then swallowed by the giant whatever? Well, with this device, you can light the wick and have a steady, large flame with which to see the "whatever" well enough to kick the snot out of it before it gets YOU! Great gift idea as well!!
