Original replacement part
This is an American Standard part, not aftermarket, this worked much better then the aftermarket part that it replaced. The aftermarket part only lasted 1 year.

Fixed my leaking shower head!
At first glance I didn't realize you could change out the back portion (the actual pressure balancing unit). I originally ordered the Pressure Balancing CARTRIDGE (the front portion that your handle attaches to) and it did not help the leak at all. I was almost ready to cut a hole in the wall and start replacing the shower unit until I ran across another post that said you needed to change BOTH. Simple fix and now ZERO LEAK! I didn't have any trouble removing the old one as a few others have mentioned. I used a flat screwdriver to slightly loosen around the edges and some needle nose pliers and it popped right out. I did order a small tube of Plumbers grease to put on all the rubber parts and the new slid right in. I did have a couple small pieces break off as mentioned, so just make sure there is nothing remaining inside before inserting the new one.

For those with older (20+ years) American Standard shower faucet
We have three baths, all with AS one handle faucets. All leaked at some point. The issue we had was finding the correct unit, because of ours being over 20 years old. These older units have a larger round disk (see the gray disk) than this part, and after a lot of research I couldn't find a replacement. We needed it because after installing a new ceramic cartridge, the downstairs shower continued to leak. I'm not sure why this balancing unit caused the issue, I only know that the lower faucet stopped leaking after I replaced both the ceramic cartridge, and Pressure Balancing Unit. Luckily, I had read a review on Amazon where someone swapped the older style larger round gray disk onto the new unit (there are two small screws and nuts holding it on). I carefully marked the top of the barrel of the new pressure unit so to match the round hole on the gray disk which is oriented up. I used a liberal amount of silicone grease on all of the o-rings, and crossed my fingers. It worked. By the way AS Customer Service was polite but pretty much useless in assisting me. One more thing. I was frustrated that I couldn’t figure it out and had a plumber come in to help. I advised him of the symptoms which left him confused. The faucet typically leaked when the washer or another shower was running. He checked the water pressure into the house and it was way too high. It seems our water pressure controller was failing too. After the controller was replaced the faucet still leaked, which is when I performed the disk swap on the new pressure unit. I wanted to share this incase someone else runs into this issue.

Our shower works again!
Suddenly, our shower started acting weird. We were getting scalded then frozen, then scalded then frozen while trying to take a shower. It was really bad. First I replaced the cartridge, but that didn’t work. Then I realized it was this inner pressure balance unit that had gone bad. Took me a little bit to figure out which part to order. You remove the cartridge and see a gray plate that is held in place by a brass ring. Take off the brass ring and pull this unit out. There apparently are several models that are similar but not exactly the same. I’m including a picture of the gray water channel plate that is the interface between this and the cartridge, and a picture of the cartridge itself (with the red ring). The cartridge is NOT included, but I’m showing it to help you determine compatibility. It might help you determine if this is the right part for you. Easy to install and once in place, we had control of the temperature in our shower once again. Very happy. Worked as promised. Direct replacement.

Perfect product and excellent service! I have some tips too for the stuck old part
Excellent service. I received it a day earlier than expected and it was a blessing as I couldn't use the shower. The water was scorching hot. I purchased this part along with the cartridge, better to replace both at once to avoid having to open up everything again....and my shower is now in full operation! Never been so happy! Very Important - The old part was extremely hard to get out and I saw a lot of posting about this. Here's what I did: - Use a paint can opener tool and slowly try to pull out using the grooves around this part. This part is plastic so you have to be very carefully to break it out. - Throughout the process of trying to pull it out, I was spraying oil (WD-40 kind) and trying to spray it in. Waited a minute or two and began pulling out again. - You need to be very patient. The trick is to pull out from all around. It's not just about applying full force as you can break it and then you're really stuck. - Once you get it out, check to see that the rubber rings are not stuck on the inside. If so, take them out with pliers before inserting the new part.

Perfect fit and easy installation.
Fits the American Standard Reliant 1495.500 Series. Highly recommended to change the Ceramic Cartridge (023529-0070A) at the same time. Don't throw away the original Pressure Balancing Unit—the disk collar on older faucets is slightly larger—so depending on your particular installation, you may need to swap the older Pressure Balancing Unit collar onto the new unit. Prior to installation, make sure the o-rings from the old Pressure Balancing Unit have been completely removed from the valve housing and that o-ring seats are clean!
