Lord Denning : The Discipline of Law Paperback – 5 May 2005

This is the book that everyone should read who has the ambition to write well. Lord Denning's legal career has passed into the hallowed realms of folk lore and myth. But his writing style remains the benchmark for clear written English and is held up as the ideal in a wide variety of effective communication courses. We have all read the impossibly convoluted prose of standard legal documents. When you read the articles and judgements of Lord Denning, you realise that it does not have to be like this. Short sentences containing a single idea, a down to earth approach, and the ability to tell a story clearly, are the distinguishing features of the Denning method. Sentences with numerous dependent clauses seperated by innumerable commas, are banished to the outer darkness. So he is able to present the elements of complex judgements in a fashion comprehensible to anyone. The other thing was that Denning believed in searching for the "Spirit" or Purpose of the law in reaching a judgement rather than adhereing strictly to the letter. This made him appear a more compassionate advocate than many of his perhaps more distinguished peers. The frequent conflicts and sometimes acrimonious differences of opinion are clearly described in this excellent book. This is a book for all who love the English language and its expression. I heartily recommend to all who share my love of the subject.

The book arrived a few days later than expected but it was not urgent. The book was inexpensive and is in good condition. I’m enjoying reading it.

I originally could not review this as it appeared to have been delayed in the post. Now I have it, I can recommend it as an excellent set of cases that Lord Denning describes in detail and his appliance of law to them. Very good read

It's a great book by the Indefatigable Denning. A great wealth of knowledge for any person with an interest in law. A must read for all.

I got the cheapest version and it was a signed copy - brilliant! It is easy to read and is enjoyable. I agree with Lord Denning's approach in cases so it made for happy reading.

I have yet to read this, essay deadline looming. But it looks an interesting read with several of the key cases and Lord Dennings unique approach to the application of law.
