Harry Potter À L'école Des Sorciers (Folio Junior) (French Edition) Pocket Book – October 12, 2017

This review is specifically in reference to the French audio version, which I bought to listen to in the car while commuting to help with learning the sounds of French (or reviewing the sounds I started learning several decades ago in college). As much as I enjoy the story, I am disappointed with this recording. Perhaps it would be fine if I were watching the book while listening with headphones...but that's not what I intended for this CD. The problem is that much of the expression used by the narrator is essentially whispering, and the expressive voices for the various characters are generally softly voiced or quite inflected, to the point that it can be quite challenging to understand the text, especially without the benefit of the printed text. For example in the first chapter when Dumbledore is introduced as Harry is being deposited on the Dursley's doorstep, it's very hard to hear what he's saying when listening in the car because he's voiced like an old man of poor health you might find in a nursing home. It might be dramatic, and maybe it's even a helpful indication of how to express things in an authentically French way, but it's hard even to hear that voice in anything but a silent acoustic, let alone understand what it is saying. So part of me realizes that this is probably a good exercise in trying to understand 'real' spoken French, but I was hoping for text more clearly and sonorously pronounced for listening in the car. But this is the one French audio version there is (at least currently), and it certainly will work, especially when I can listen while reading the book in French at the same time, an opportunity I have not yet made time to enjoy. Right here I'm imagining a professor of French or some otherwise advanced student of French shaking their head and disagreeing even with the concept of my evaluation, and they're probably right. If I knew the language better, if I had practiced more first, if I read the hard copy first, I might recognize this recording as a wonderful dramatic reading of the Harry Potter story. But that's not my situation, at least not yet, and I'm just trying to help others who might be interested in this recording, like I was and am, more for the language than for the particular story. For reasons I can't really explain here I also bought the German versions of the book and the CD a few years ago and did a similar thing while learning some elements of German, and _that_ recording seemed great in the car, with clear enunciation and sonorous tone almost always present. A strong voice seems much more appropriate to me for Dumbledore, for example, given the strength of his character. Listening to German Hagrid ask Harry "Du weist nicht was du bist?" in a stunned and searching voice was definitely more satisfying, as another example, than straining to hear incredulous French Hagrid rasp out a mostly whispered "Tu ne sais même pas qui tu es?" Listening to the German recording, that moment was clear the first time I heard it, but with the French recording I had to go back and search for it even to figure out where it happened. Again, maybe it says more about my own weak preparation before attempting this exercise, but I was hoping for more clarity. So I'd say get this CD if you're interested in hearing a fluent speaker narrate this story, but don't expect it to be easy to distinguish all the elements of the language.

I need to learn French really well for school, but reading scholarly articles and dull books gets boring after a while. A friend recommended I check out the Harry Potter books in another language and enjoy reading something that helps build my vocabulary, particularly in more common communication patterns, and offers a fun way of getting used to medium grammar. And she was right! What a fabulous idea! I love Harry Potter, need to speed up my reading in French, and see new things about both the language and the plots that I wouldn't have otherwise seen.I do have a few cautions, however. The wizarding/witchcraft vocabulary that abounds in the books will be of little obvious value in the real world. But looking them up in the first quarter or half of the first book will get rather frustrating unless you know the books forward and backward and don't need to look them up. But the vocab is surprisingly varied and difficult and will help anyone not fluent in French. The vocabulary is, on the other hand, generally pretty straightforward. So anyone with a semester of college study or a year of high school study will be fine. Even this may not be necessary, but I find my patience tested in looking up vocab all the time, and I've taken 5 semesters of French and have read much more for research.Still, anyone looking for a fun and challenging way to practice their French should look into buying them in another language.

I am always going to love Harry Potter. I got the first book in French to see if I was able to understand/remember any of it since I studied French in High School and College. I was able to understand about 25-30% without having to refer to the English version or a dictionary. I found it interesting that the names of some characters, the houses, and even the money was different though from the English version and the French Version. I've been teaching myself French for quite awhile now using a free online site. I thought I could better my "exposure" and understanding of the language if I read a book I'm quite familiar with that has been translated into French. I haven't had the book long and I've already reached the point when Harry gets his Nimbus 2000 from McGonagall. I do think it a bit funny what some of the names have been translated to, and wonder why some changed but others didn't. Google Translate works well if I can't figure out what character is being referenced or is speaking, as well as figuring out certain sentences. I'm acutally understanding a lot more than I thought I would. It's been great so far. I hope to get the audio CD soon and follow along with the narrator. I don't know if the book is abridged or not, but it's still worth owning for the French practice.

As an A level french student, I have found reading this book really useful. As I know the books inside out, it is a good place to start reading French, as I don't need to look up every word- I can usually figure out the meaning. It's slow progress, but I'd definitely recommend trying to read this if you're learning French- it'll improve your skills so much!If you found this review helpful, please click the button below :)

Grande fan d'Harry Potter, j'ai plusieurs éditions et je dois dire que celle là est, à mon goût, la plus belle.Une belle couverture cartonnée en relief. Un papier épais de très belle qualité, rien à voir avec les livres habituels.De superbes illustrations et plusieurs Pop up.Tout est extrêmement soigné et bien protéger avec des cartons et des papiers de soie.Cette édition est vraiment magnifique !J'en ai déjà commandé plusieurs pour les offrir à mes ami(e)s.Un splendide cadeau pour tout fan de la saga d'Harry Potter !

Premier roman de mon fils. A 6 ans, il trouvait qu'il y avait un peu trop de pages. 15 jours après il demande à son père de lui lire le début. Il est devenu complètement accro. il a lu depuis même le 4! Il n'a que 8 ans. Mais stop, parce que Harry devient un ado et a d'autres problématiques que la sorcellerie.. Les films sont impressionnants et font peur. L'avantage du roman c'est que l'enfant imagine des images en rapport avec son âge. On vient de l'offrir à 2 autres enfants pour leur donner le goût de la lecture.
