Just like my school reunion!
This is a 1997 American black comedy crime film set against a high school reunion for the class of 1986. The disc opens to language selection [half dozen European languages] with no other features [other than scene selection] but as soon as the opening scene hits the screen you know you’re about to see something special. As we listen to the thumping lines of ‘I can see clearly now’ we see Martin Q. Blank [John Cusack] as a modern day assassin carrying out his latest ‘hit’ but the stress of the job is getting to him so he’s seeing his hard done by psychiatrist, Dr. Oatman [Alan Arkin]. Meanwhile his office assistant informs him that his next job is in his home suburb of Grosse Point in Detroit but Martin is reluctant to go as he still has feelings for Debi [Minnie Driver], his ex-flame who he abandoned on prom night 10 years previously. With the feds on his tail, things inevitably go awry.Dan Aykroyd plays one of his best roles as martins former partner and now a freelance operative. The acting from the four leads is top notch and the script is lively and full of dark humour, but it’s the blistering soundtrack that helps hold it all together, featuring mainly independent music from the 1980s. Despite some obvious flaws this remains a gripping and original movie that has not noticeably dated and still remains fresh. If you like 80’s music such as the Clash, like dark humour and are prepared to watch a film where Cusack looks like a mortician for its entirety, this this could be for you.

Oddball mashup of action movie and bratpack style collegiate do. Shouldn't work but
Conflicted assassin with issues and a psychoanalyst who's petrified of him and wants him to go away is trying to avoid joining a newly formed killers cooperative. To confuse matters further he gets an invitation to his old alma maters college reunion and his assistant thinks he should go.Loads of action, musical nostalgia and a reignited romance despite the girl in questions father being his latest target. To be honest it's completely insane and it shouldn't work but somehow it does. Nuts but wonderful.

A WONDERFUL IDEA! A HITMAN GOES TO HIS HIGH SCHOOL REUNION. ...
As soon as I saw this film, it immediately became one of my all-time favourites. What a wonderful idea! A hitman goes to his high school reunion and reconnects with his childhood sweetheart,, who just happens to be a radio DJ playing one of the hippest soundtracks ever. All the cast are at the very top of their game, and have never been better: John Cusack as the hitman in an existential crisis; Minnie Driver as his long-lost love with a nice line in crackling dialogue; and Dan Aykroyd as Grocer, a rival with a preposterous agenda - a trade union for hitmen (join it or die). There are some wonderful set pieces - amongst them a shoot-out in a convenience store, with the counter assistant completely oblivious as he's playing a noisy video game; and the hitmen breakfasting together in a diner, guns cocked under the table..Of course there are plenty of bodies to be disposed of, in this blackest of black comedies. But it's all great fun.

I killed the President of Paraguay with a fork. How have you been?....
The only thing wrong with this is the lack of any extras on the DVD, but I actually don't care as this is one of the smartest, cleverest, wittiest and funniest films I have ever seen. John Cusack is a master of black comedy and fork assassination and his sister Joan as his secretary/handler is a ditzy but deadly joy to watch. I can't recommend this movie highly enough, and it also boasts one of the coolest soundtracks courtesy of Joe Strummer and bands such as The Specials, The Clash and The Pixies. Just go and watch it, you will love yourself for it.......

Great film, lousy cover!
A film I have loved since I first happened on it some years ago, 'Quirky black comedy' would just about sum it up. John Cusack (also co produced), Minnie Driver (rrrrrrrr) and Dan Aykroyd ably assisted by a very strong supporting cast take us through the turmoil of Martin Blanks world once he realises that he no longer wants to be a hit man. Returning to his home town which is coincidentally the location of his latest (and for him hopefully last) target. Old memories are stirred up by the girl he stood up on prom night 10 years ago and their visit to the High school reunion.A film to be savoured and enjoyed.
