Sorry, there are no file pockets. The top pockets is more suitable for tools

What is the thickness of the aluminum sides and bottom?

Don’t have a clue. It is extremely well padded perfectly suitable for anything needing protection from crush or ant type of damage. I use it for very delicate calibrated environment air sensitive equipment very easily damaged equipment. Done everything with mine dropped it threw into the back of my suv never got a scratch. I dare say you could run Omer the case with a car the case would be damaged but what is inside will work fine.
