I bought this for one of my Crucial P3 4TB PCIe Gen3 3D NAND NVMe M.2 SSDs. I had some huge files that I needed to backup to yet another storage device. What used to take 40-50 minutes transferred in like 8 minutes. My main laptop is a HP OMEN - 16.1" QHD Gaming Laptop - 12th Gen Intel Core i9-12900H - 32GB Memory - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop with 2 of the Crucial 4TB SSDs. It also worked on my Lenovo - Yoga 7i 2-in-1 14" Touch Screen Laptop - Intel Evo Platform Core i5. I'm happy with this enclosure.

Item came in nicely packaged. You slide the lid off to place your SSD card in it. I inserted a 4TB SSD that I used on my Mac Mini M4. I also bought a doc that has an encasement for a SSD card that plugs into the Mac Mini, which can save spaces. The doc stopped working and reading my card, so I thought I'd try this encasement that was simple and with no bells and whistles so to speak. It does have an internal fan, which I thought was good since it reads/writes at 40Gbps, and I know they can get pretty warm when you load files onto it. This encasement worked wonderfully and then it stopped reading again and ejecting. Found out that the Apple Mac Mini's don't have enough power to power the encasement/SSD card, so I had to connect it to a hub and now it's great. I'm thinking my doc was probably still good as well but the mac mini couldn't power it along with other external drives I had connected to it. I really like the look of the encasement. It still gets hot when you load large files like video, but it does it super fast. You will need to place it somewhere cool and out in the open. Do not lay it on anything metal as the metal will not allow it to cool.

At first look, this TB3 drive enclosure from Orico is about 1/3 longer than a comparable enclosure from Minisopuru. I'm thinking no problem, Orico is a bit longer because it has to accommodate a fan. I decided to do a speed test. I first installed a Samsung 990 Pro SSD into this Orico SSD drive enclosure, and after 1 hr of being stuck in the middle of CrystalDiskMark speed test, I decided to turn off my laptop not realizing at the time that there was a problem with the Orico enclosure. I than swapped the drive out and installed a WD Black SN850X, which includes monitoring software. That is when I discovered the Orico fan in my unit fails turns on. This inevitably causes the drive to overheat and shutdown. I put the Samsung 990 Pro SSD into my Minisopuru (which does not require a fan) and the CrystalDiskMark speed test worked like a charm. No problem with it. In conclusion, this Orico TB3 enclosure has potential but it also has a fatal flaw in that if the fan fails to operate, there is insufficient cooling to keep the drive operating and that could mean disastrous impact if the drive is unable to shut itself down.

Caution: This NVMe M.2 case is NOT compatible with any Intel based MacBook Air/Pro, iMac and any other that runs on Intel processors. This is mainly older Mac products 2020 and older. I was told by Orico tech support that it works fine on Mac computers based on the ARM "M" processors. It also has quirky compatibility issues with certain NVMe M.2 SSD's like those by Samsung, WD Black SSD and a few others. Tech support recommended that I use mainstream SSD's, I don't know what can be more mainstream than Samsung and Western Digital. 90% of my external SSD cases are made by Orico which is why I purchased this new SSD external case. Unfortunately it uses a controller that has compatibility issues, Orico has acknowledged the issues in an e-mail to me. I hope Orico will release a new version to fix all the problems. NOTE: Problems are only with older Mac computers (2020 and older) with Intel processors (ie. i5, i7, i9). No issues with Windows computers. Orico tech support was quick to respond and I commend their dedication to their customers. This is why 90% of my external NVMe SSD enclosures are made by Orico.

I had repeated overheating with this item when hooked to brand new mac mini m4. Using Samsung 990 NVME drive evo the temperature got to 160 F all the time. This was a consistent issue when hooked to thunderbolt4 and using both manufacturer cable and replacement thunderbolt 5 cable. The plastic case and ill placed fan are an oven. Putting an external fan on it dropped it to 125. My replacement Acasis thunderbolt 4 case does not go over 104 without a supplemental extenal fan. Poor thermal design characteristics. Bad choice for high speed Thunderbolt use. Overheating caused power supply overloading and repeated umount errors from Mac mini. The Orico unit is unsuitable for use as a thunderbolt 4 external item. It works ok on thunderbolt 3 or 10Gbps Usb.
