This lung exerciser device looks promising but it has a few design flaws. It actually works as an ‘incentive spirometer’ which can help to increase lung capacity by encouraging users to inhale while watching the balls rise. The regulator dial at the end is supposed to restrict the flow of air entering the device. The smaller holes increase the amount of suction you have to apply to raise the coloured balls.The packet has no English instructions, hence no safety advice about cleaning and storage and, importantly, it should only be used by one patient and you should seek professional medical advice about why it might not be suitable for some conditions.The product description mentions “inspiration” and “inhalation rates” but the photograph shows it upside down and it does not work in this position. You might assume that it will work as an exhalation trainer in the position shown, however, the very basic design of the retaining plate on the regulator means that air escapes out of the slot and is not controlled by the hole. If you touch the plate during use you can hear the difference as the air blows out. So it is not suitable for exhalation (breathing out) or as a peak flow device.Main issues:1. Lack of instructions.2. Cleaning the device between uses is extremely important to avoid the build-up of bacteria in the chambers. The device can be pulled apart quite easily but the top plate can only be removed after taking out the two screws.3. Once you remove the top plate to clean the chambers, you will find that the balls have a small pin hole in them. This makes it almost impossible to keep the insides clean and dry.
