Helped with Spay / Age Related Urinary Incontinence
I’d like to preface this by saying I have no knowledge of herbs whatsoever. I got this book to do an herbal support for our 8 year old female rescue. She was spayed at just 13 weeks old and her incontinence has gotten worse this year. Her vet initially put her on Proin ER 75 mg and that made her such a neurotic mess. She was restless throughout the night and she just behaved like a completely different dog. We immediately put a stop to it and I bought this book to learn about herbs that might help her. Using the knowledge I got from this book, I was able to find a pet product that seemed potent. Thankfully, they are pretty open about their formulas. I bought and mixed the extracts. She’s been on it for a few weeks now and happy to report that she is no longer having accidents. She’s pretty happy about not wearing diapers at night :)

Destined to be a classic!
Herbs for Pets is a huge, useful, interesting, well-researched book, illustrated with gorgeous full color photos, and printed on high quality, glossy stock. At first glance it seems like a coffee table book, and the quality of the design and photography reinforce that impression. However, the content exceeds even the highest expectations. Both authors are experienced herbalists, and this book is far more than a list of recipes for dealing with common health problems. It covers the principles and theories of herbal medicine, as well as ethical issues involved with using plants. There are literally hundreds of plant medicines included in this massive resource. Each entry includes a plant description, information on cultivating and obtaining the plant, a guide to the preparation and administration of the herb, beautiful, large, clear, color photographs of the herbs, and information on contraindications and side effects. There is easy to understand information about what common maladies can be treated by each herb contained with the description of each herb. The herb guide alone is almost 200 pages long, but the book includes more than that. It is followed by an excellent encyclopedia of ailments, with practical care suggestions as well as references to appropriate herbs. There is even a comprehensive section on nutrition, utilizing the holistic approach that sets the Tilfords apart as herbalists. They cover nutrition and herbal care for many species of animals, including dogs, cats, horses, birds, and reptiles. They describe Western, ayurvedic, and Chinese herbs, and give information on how to grow many useful herbs in your own garden. The Tilfords explain different fields of complementary and alternative medicine, including acupuncture and homeopathy, and indicate which modality is useful for what conditions. Just when you thought it couldn't get any more useful comes the guide to losing animals to death and a listing of holistic veterinarians who work with herbs, as well as holistic veterinary organizations. There is even a short list of recommended commercial foods for those who aren't ready to make their pets' food themselves.Still, the cornerstone of the book is the detailed, lushly illustrated herb guide, or materia medica. Each entry is at least two pages long, and most are several pages long and include multiple large photographs. The quality of this resource cannot be overstated. If you have an interest in herbal medicine, for humans or for animals, this book will be a treasured classic and more than earn its shelf space. Its price of around forty dollars might seem steep if you haven't actually seen the book, but I have seen many books of this quality and much less usefulness for twice that amount. The publisher intends a price increase of about ten dollars in June, so it might be wise to get the book sooner rather than later. You won't be sorry!

Exactly what I needed
This is a very good reference book, and is perfect for people who are new to considering herbs for their pets. It was easy to follow, laid out in a manner where its easy to find things, and each herb is explained in the similar steps. Its certainly a great place to start and reference what you need to look into if it doesn't have all the information you need. I felt it was clear for most entries how much you needed per species of animals (companion vs livestock). I also appreciated that it was a good starting point for human aliments as well as the herbs tend to do the same thing in humans as they do in animals.

Organization
It was a lot of words and information was just placed everywhere. Not really organized.

Awesome compilation of herbs to use for your pet
This book is fabulous! I was always afraid to use herbs on my dog for fear it would be something dogs are not supposed to ingest- (like chocolate or onions, which can be fatal to small dogs) Now I can safely administer fresh herbs for natural healing to her. This book is chock full of information. I didn't feel it was lacking in any way.I highly reccomend it- My dog was so sick, I thought she was dying, (I had taken her to the vet, who said my dog missed my daughter who had moved out 2 years prior, even though I told him I didn't think it was that- since it was so long ago and the symtoms she was experiencing were recent. Plus my daughter never even played with the dog & I felt it was allergies or digestive) I followed the advice of this book and within 2 DAYS of using the herbs as reccomended- she went from being listless and refusing to eat- while trembling in pain- to wanting food again, no trembling and bouncing around like a puppy!Probably saved me hundreds if not thousands in vet bills.

Use this book often
After not wanting to put my cat through an abundanceof traditional medicines, I bought this book and tried a few ofthe mixtures of herbs I bought at the Health Food Stores. Shedid well on some recommended herbs for allergies, and had moreenergy on a daily mixture of other herbs. Would recommend itfor those who are tired of drugging up their pets.

Missing only one thing
This IS a beautiful and amazingly comprehensive book. I own many books on herbs which I have studied for over 35 years and this book has taught me things the other books never addressed. I only gave it 4 stars because it's missing the one thing I purchased it for. It does not address newborn and baby animals specifically. It specifically discusses care for the elderly animal or the pregnant and lactating animal but completely skips newborns. I'm getting a puppy and I wanted to know dosage and herbs appropriate for the challenges of a new puppy in transition. It doses by weight and since a puppy will weigh about 8 lb it's hard to imagine how low the dose would be and what herbs would really be appropriate. Still, I'm glad I bought this book it will be helpful throughout my dog's life.
