Ultimate Spider-Man By Jonathan Hickman Vol. 1: Married With Children

The perfect Spiderman for someone who grew up idolizing Spiderman.
One of the best Spiderman comics I have ever read--and I have read a fair share of comics. I think what drew me in was how adult it was (not in NSFW way): the dialog is good, the art is really good, the characters are very interesting and are not flat like some of the characters in Marvel 616. I want this to be the main Spiderman--anyone can relate to him, esp. older nerds like me.

An impressive retelling of the Spider-Man mythos, with some added twists.
This is a shockingly good series from Marvel, who seem to have completely lost the plot on what to do with their flagship character over in their main universe. I hadn't read any Hickman before this, and I know he is well-regarded as a writer. Most of all, I like how he bends and reshapes familiar Spider-Man comic history here to great effect. Some great ideas here.I won't spoil any story details, but it all feels fresh and vibrant. Chechetto's artwork is absolutely terrific, and he lends a mature but fun tone to the story. Great buy, absolutely recommend this collection, and I can't wait for the next one.

A Fresh and Exciting Take on These Classic Characters
Ultimate Spider-Man tells a phenomenal story, one that manages to feel new and exciting while remaining familiar and true to Spider-Man and his wonderful supporting cast. We see Peter Parker becoming Spider-Man later in life and in a more sinister world, and he has to navigate that challenge while balancing marriage and fatherhood. And the artwork is truly exceptional, from the inspired character designs to the riveting fights. Highly recommended!

A new way in to loving Spider-Man
Spider-Man may be the only superhero I ever really followed growing up. And I’m falling in love with the character all over again. He’s fun and light. He’s witty and clever. He doesn’t take himself too seriously. And now he’s a dad, married endgame to MJ. It’s a really fun re-entry into an old classic and I’m excited to see where it goes next.

A Phenomenal, Fresh Take on Spider-Man
As a lifelong Spider-Man fan, I’ve read countless iterations of the character, but Jonathan Hickman’s Ultimate Spider-Man is something truly special. The story is original, bold, and absolutely phenomenal, breathing new life into the mythos while still respecting what makes Spider-Man great.Hickman has long been one of my favorite writers—his work on X-Men, House of X, and Secret Wars was groundbreaking, and he brings that same level of depth and world-building here. The storytelling is sharp, layered, and gripping from the very first page. And the artwork is absolutely stunning. Every panel is beautifully crafted, capturing the emotion, action, and energy of Spider-Man’s world in a way that makes it impossible to put down. This is exactly the kind of fresh, innovative storytelling I was hoping for. If you’re a fan of Spider-Man or Hickman’s work, this is a must-read. I can’t wait to see where this series goes next!

Are Comics Back?
I've been a comic book reader since the 90's and have seen the industry go through ups and downs. I gave up on comics when the writers became too political and put their agendas above mythos and quality writing. The final straw for me was when Marvel decided to make Captain America a freaking Nazi. With that being said, I have kept up a little bit with my favorite writers, including Hickman. I have been a huge Hickman fan since his Fantastic Four run, though, I will admit, I was not a big fan of his X-men. I thought in his X-Men run, he went a bit too far with the world-building, and lost track of the characters. This Spider-Man series, however, so far, has me tentatively excited for Marvel comics again. It's just classic great story telling, and I think Hickman has done a superb job. Hickman can get wordy at times (though thankfully, not as wordy as Michael Bendis) but in this series, he has really kept it simple and clean. The world building in this Ultimate universe has not gone too far off the original Marvel Universe, while building on fresh ideas. I really enjoyed the relationships between this Peter Parker, his family, Uncle Ben, Jonah Jamison, and Harry Osborne. Hickman achieved bringing this Spider Man back to basics, capturing the nostalgia of what makes Peter Parker Spider Man such an endearing and beloved character while giving it a fresh take without blowing up the mythos. You can tell Hickman truly respects the characters and didn't want to obliterate the lore as so man current writers do in their hubris.

One of the best Spider-Man stories in a while!
I have read this collection three times before writing a review. The new Ultimate premise provides for a great springboard for a very different set of scenarios with many familiar characters. The writing, character work,, storytelling through the artwork and coloring is top-notch! Rereads provide new details and I enjoyed the pacing through panel-work. Please take the time to read this.

A Great Starting Point / What The Readers Want
This is the Spider-Man comic I have been waiting a decade for. For some reason with Marvel Comics these days there is a mindset that Peter Parker and Mary Jane cannot be happy by staying married together ever since the release of the terrible storyline One More Day. Nick Spencer almost undid this terrible decision but was prevented from doing so.The series gives readers exactly what they want by starting it off with Peter and MJ already married and with kids. This is a brand new continuity that is separate from the old Ultimate universe that welcomes readers with a new starting point. Peter is not yet established as Spider-Man and the story is about him gaining his powers while he is an older and more mature individual. There are quite a few surprises that I will not spoil, but it will demonstrate how this is not the same universe as the original 616 universe.I have to hand it to Jonathan Hickman as he is a great writer that is able to grab the attention of his audience and keep them invested in what happens next. This was apparent on his previous runs with Avengers and New Avengers. Also, the art by Marco Checchetto is top tier as this man is one of the best artists working in the comic industry currently at this time. Check out this comic if you are looking to read a good Spider-Man series.
