Product Description Mae West stars as dancer and lion tamer Tira in this romantic comedy. Short of cash, Tira starts performing ever more dangerous stunts until her circus builds up an exciting reputation. But when she meets handsome Jack Clayton (Cary Grant), Tira ends up suing him for breach of contract after their relationship breaks up. Only when Clayton lets her win the case does she realise that she truly loves him. .co.uk Review In I'm No Angel, Mae West second star vehicle, she's sideshow attraction Tira, "the girl who discovered you don't have to have feet to be a dancer." As usual, West wrote all her own dialogue for the film, and it's full of priceless wisecracks. A crowd of men ogles her as she tosses off a saucy little number, "They Call Me Sister Honky Tonk," swinging her hips phlegmatically. Then she slithers offstage, muttering "Suckers." Bored with life, Tira consults a fortuneteller. "I see a man in your future," he drones. "What, only one?" quips Mae. Tira wants to quit the carnival, so her boss (an unctuous Edward Arnold) makes her a proposition. If she'll become the show's lion tamer, she can meet "the swells." Just one little thing: she's got to put her head in the lion's mouth. (West insisted on performing this stunt herself, to the horror of Paramount Pictures' executives.) Enter Cary Grant as Jack Clayton, an aristocrat who falls for this floozie from the wrong side of the tracks. Some of the film's merriest scenes show Tira and her five black maids having a ball dancing and singing as she prepares for her dates with Jack. (West made it her business to keep as many of her black girlfriends working in movies as possible.) Tira's head maid, Beulah, played by Gertrude Michael, is the object of that momentous line "Oh, Beulah, peel me a grape." Mae slays 'em all in this picture, dressed, as always, in fabulously flamboyant finery. --Laura Mirsky

Mae at her best
Mae is fabulous here in two of her most successful movies: 'I'm No Angel' 1933 and 'Klondike Annie' 1936. Mae was such a force of nature back in the 1930's. She was America's highest paid actress and she wrote the scrip for both of these movies too, not many women had that much power in the film business...even today! She was also around 40 when she became a huge hollywood star, beating off all her younger rivels. In 'I'm no angel' (like all her movies) she flirts with every man in the film but ends up with Cary Grant (well who wouldn't!). This movie is probably the closest role to who she really was, and she camps it up with numerous one liners all the way through the film. In 'Klondike Annie' she plays a bad girl gone good, but again camping it up all the way! Some people say that she couldn't act much, but I disagree. She was not so long ago named one of the most influentional women in film industry, and let's face it, both of these movies were originally plays, so she must have been good enough to play them on stage to get them made into pictures. The DVD's are remastered and the films look remarkedly good considering they are 80 years old!

Comedy gold!
From the minute this film started to the minute it ended, I had a smile on my face! West is utterly fabulous in this film that has one of the most preposterous plots, yet it simply works! West swaggers her way through this wonderful comedy, doling out the classic one-liners as if they are going out of fashion. I often had to rewind to catch up with the wise cracks, I was laughing that much. The rest of the cast are also utterly superb, all coming together for the jury/trial scene at the end, which has to be one of the funniest things I have seen. West looks amazing throughout the film, with costumes that teeter between fabulously elegant and totally camp. For a film that is over eighty years old, the print is almost too good to be true, although the sound can be a little muffled in places. A comedy classic, just buy it!

What good are clothes if I haven't got my head?
Mae West co-wrote this piece based on an un-produced screenplay called The Lady And The Lions, it charts the rise of Tira {West} from carnival crowd pleaser to massive circus headliner. Tho I would be doing a disservice to a very strong and on form supporting cast by not praising them heartily, this really is pure and simply a Mae West tour de force, full of ego and show business swagger, she not only tames the lions here, she also tames everything else that happens to have a pulse, be it the characters in the film or the multi sexed viewing public, she defines the word diva whilst poking all in the ribs with comic knowing comic aplomb. I personally only purchased the film because it stars one of my favourite actors in Cary Grant, yet come the end of the film I was in no doubt who ran the show here. I was very interested to read that Grant often stated that West was the most awkward actor he ever worked with, what isn't in doubt is that he surely would of been taking notes backstage on the art of comic timing. It should also be noted for the record that Grant and West were friends to a degree, certainly Grant visited West much later in life as they both entered old age.Containing an array of quotable lines and put downs, I'm No Angel is essential viewing for anyone interested in classic cinema, it matters not if West's style isn't really your cup of tea, because lets face facts here, the lady was a star, and here you get to watch her defend herself in court, and it's here that the lady showcases why she is often termed as a golden age legend.PS: The supporting cast are great as well by the way 8/10

Hilarious! And utterly brilliant
This amazing woman wrote plays, her own scripts and dialogue, which are still funny today. The quips, innuendo and X-factor magnetism are all here. What is so wonderful about her is that she has more sex appeal in her little finger and sashaying walk than all the vacuous, airhead, no-personality skinny models and actresses of today. She is a genius and fabulous, and I urge you to discover her.

Mae
The legend that is Mae West made relatively few films, with only two or three of those worth seeing these days.I'm No Angel has a few good lines, a relaxed Cary Grant in an early role as Mae's prime beefcake, and competent direction, but that's about it.If you're new to the great dame, better to get hold of her previous movie She Done Him Wrong, which is far better than this rather lame effort. Cary is in that too. But there's more of a story, more of Mae, and with a juicier script.

A superb film
Watching this film has been a revelation and its interesting how a film made in the 1930's can still be so entertaining todayTira completely controls the action as did Mae in life and cinema and you get the feeling that if its been done ,Mae did it first!

Super film
