This Mower is a Beast
I had been using a 14” Greenworks mower for about 4 years for about 1/3 acre of lawn. It served me well but was starting to wear, and since I was already happily invested in the 40V Greenworks universe, I decided I needed to get a new mower. I debated about whether to get another 14”, but because two of my lawns are sloped and there’s a lot of mowing to do, after reading the mostly positive reviews I decided to get the powered 21” version. Am I glad that I did! The 14” was fine, but this is a beast. Obviously just due to the larger size it makes for quicker work of my lawn. Originally I thought I would just use the self-propelled function for going up hills, but it works so well and is so easy to use, I find that I use self-propelled for almost everything. Using the self-propelled mode definitely uses up the battery faster. One of the new 5.0mA batteries lasts for the entire yard. This is an improvement over the earlier 40V batteries which required 2 for the same size yard. Posters have commented about the mower getting locked up coming out of this mode. I have had no issues with this at all. When I come to the end of strip I just release the levers to stop mowing and it coasts to a stop and can then be restarted with no problem. Likewise I had read some comments about people finding the variable cutting speed to seem strange. While the blade does speed up and slow down depending on grass height and thickness, to me at least it’s pretty seamless. The mulcher works very well and leaves no clippings. Not only will this help keep the lawn happy, I don’t have to stop and empty grass clippings either. It comes mostly pre-assembled and seems to be built sturdily. The height adjustment lever and mechanism is more robust than the smaller mower. I expect it will give me many years of use given how well-built it seems to be. The wheels are made of plastic which might seem a little cheap, but they were similar on the previous mower and lasted for years so I’m not concerned. Because of the larger size of the mower as well as the extra weight of the self-propel motor it weighs about 20 pounds more than my previous one did. This is not a deal-breaker, although I have a small rear yard, and I definitely notice the extra weight climbing with it up the stairs to get up there. By waiting until prime days, I was able to get it for a very good discount off of full retail. Between the larger diameter, good mulcher, and self-propelled motor, my yard is now taking me 50% less time to mow which is great! I’m very happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend this as an excellent choice for a residential electric lawn mower.

Too weak, too expensive, not enough battery
Awful. It is only effective at trimming about an inch or two off of a well-maintained lawn. Anything even slightly taller or overgrown require multiple passes at different settings only removing about an inch at a time. In perfect conditions where you mow your lawn and backyard every week the battery that is included will now be enough. I bought an additional larger battery and even with both of those I cannot mow my entire yard without both dying and becoming so hot that the batteries cannot start charging for over an hour after you stop mowing. For this amount of money buy something gas or spend more on a higher quality mower. The time lost by constantly having to stop and unclog the mower makes the job take 3x longer than it should. A fully charged battery also only lasts about 30 minutes in ideal conditions.

A MUST, excellent mower, very impressed & satisfied.
This is the easiest & quietest lawn mower I have ever used. I am used to the bulky, heavy, loud, pushing hard constantly, gas mowers. This mower is easy to use, you barely push it & we haven't even tried the self propelled part of the mower yet, so I believe I am going to end up being MORE impressed & liking this little mower even more, IF that is even possible. I have used it once & my son has used it twice. I mowed our entire front yard, back yard, sides, complete area across our driveway & halfway down our hill on 1 charge!!! When my son mowed down our hill, the grass was very tall & this was the first mowing of the season, so it was thick & bulky. This mower took care of all of it. Yes, you can hear the sound of the mower change in the thickest & highest grass, but if you just slow down & allow the mower to get the bulk cut down, it keeps pressing on. The mower has only bogged down & turned off 1 time & that was in the thickest part of the grass. I AM EXTREMELY IMPRESSED!!! The instructions are easy to understand. This mower is very sturdy too. I just can't believe it has mowed what it has mowed. This mower is so very quiet, it sounds like a large fan running. This is our first battery powered mower & we love it. I never thought mowing could be so easy. Charging the battery did take about 2 hours, but it was completely dead. We also left the mulching plug in the mower & the grass was cut up so fine, that you couldn't tell the yard was mowed. Grass wasn't laying everywhere to rake up or blow off the yard, we haven't attached the bag yet to catch grass either, the mulching was so good, we didn't need it. I could brag on this mower all day. Excellent job & product Greenworks, thank you for making our lives easier. You HAVE to get this mower. It is awesome. I am very satisfied & impressed. I wish I had taken before & after photos, you wouldn't believe the tall, bulky grass this little mower took care of.

10,000 sf yard uses at least two charges to complete.
It will work for a medium size yard with a little care. It is better for a small yard. I found that I have to have the blade set at medium so as not to challenge the motor/battery on long grass. The battery at 40v runs out pretty quickly and even faster for long grass. I did 3/4ths of my yard today and still need to finish the rest tomorrow. It cuts nicely but runs out of juice too quickly. I was hoping to do the whole yard with one charge but I need three charges to complete. My strategy going forward is to mow half the yard. Put the spent battery on the charger and work on something else for 2 hours. Then go out and hope to finish the other half. Assembly: Assembly was pretty straight forward and simple but the handle was a bit of a challenge because the side that has the power lines attached would not fit into the opening. I had to use the bolt to pull the sides together in order to get it to fit into place. Once that was inserted I removed the bolt, pushed the handle fully into place and then inserted the bolt and tightened where it needed to go. The right side went in without any trouble. Battery: The battery came with only a very low charge. So be sure to charge the battery first. Upon my first mow I had the mower set pretty low and it was being strained more than I realized. The mower shut off and the battery overheated. I was concerned that this would not hold up for me. The charger lights up red if the battery is too warm for charging. So I had to let the battery sit for 45 minutes. It then lit up "flashing green" and started charging. On my next mow I set the mower higher so as not to tax the battery as much. This really helped a lot and I was able to mow a good section of lawn before the battery was exhausted. The mower is lightweight enough that for some of the lawn I didn't need to use the propulsion. The back wheels tend to stay engaged and not roll smoothly after using the propulsion. I overcome this by letting off of the propulsion and pushing forward a little and this sets the wheels free so that when I pull back they roll back smoothly. update1: I love it. It is now three months later and it is pretty wonderful. I just had to get used to how to mow with an electric and be prepared to recharge the battery. Now that I have mowed the lawn a few times I wish I had purchased an electric mower years ago. My lot is 10,000 sf and I do have to charge about 2.3 charges to complete. I just plan ahead. Mow, charge, go back and finish as much as possible. Next day I wrap it up and leave the partial charge for the next time I have to mow. If the battery holds up for a long time it is excellent. I make sure I run the battery completely down and then recharge completely. It is great to be able to just go an mow at the push of a button. No fuel needed, no oil changes. Quieter by far and cuts great. I let go of the propulsion a few feet from the end of the row and that releases the propulsion engagement and it rolls freely. It is so light weight that I could mow the entire yard without any propulsion. If you need more power buy the 80 volt. I have a gas mower that needs repair and now I don't even need it. Update 2: I love this mower now. It held up well all year. I mowed 17 times this year with this machine. I plan on purchasing a second battery so I can finish the yard and not have to wait for a recharge. I plan on buying more electric powered machines because of how well this machine worked for me.

Battery is not strong enough
The machine does work well and almost as advertised - if you don't count the actual run time/amount of yard mowed part. It is relatively quiet, easy to put together on arrival, and easy to adjust the height. The biggest issues are the weight without the self propel engaged (not as much of an issue for someone younger and more fit) and the fact it doesn't mow enough area. Even without the self-propel function, the battery doesn't last long enough to mow just our backyard. We are on under a third of an acre total, so this mower should have been sufficient. After several uses by two different people, this lawnmower can truly be described as not worth the price due to a battery without enough power to mow the amount of lawn advertised. This mower, with the self-propel function engaged on the lowest setting, can only handle about a thousand feet worth of lawn that is mowed every seven to ten days, not the up to a third of an acre on a single charge that is advertised. Using this mower without the self-propel function makes it harder to mow due to the higher weight of the machine. As an older couple who simply wanted to make mowing the yard a little easier to extend how long we can mow our yard ourselves, we were disappointed with this mower.

The Real Deal - This is the one to get!
I've been through3 different Greenworks mowers. First, just so you know, their support is really really poor. On an hour phone call they spent over 40 minutes of it just registering my mower, battery, and charger. Such a waste of time it is actually funny :) After that, they were not able to solve the problem and it was all over, such a let down. So all the mowers that are electric basically are similar. While most reviewers concentrate on how they are quiet and what kind of a cut you will get and how long they will go, they all are very similar. Specifically targeting the self propelled type, there are 2 things that really make the difference. All the rest is pretty much how much you can afford on how high you go on the battery voltage. I bought the 40v, and there is 40v, 60v, and 80v as your choices mostly or something close to that. The main 2 things to look at is first - when mowing using the self propelled and you come to a tree or a fence or under a bush and you need to back the mower up. The wheels on the self propelled mowers lock up for a period of time. That means you have to just wait to pull the mower back. Sounds simple but most of them operate unacceptable. The first 3 from Greenworks (and 1 from Ego) take an unusually long time to release the wheels so you can pull back. You either just stand there, or you drag it backwards with locked wheels. The lady in support at Greenworks told me after you stop, you have to go up to 8 feet MORE before the wheels unlock. The second thing to look at is the walking speed. At 71 years old the slowest walking speed on the Greenworks was almost a slow trot. I just couldn't keep up with it. Greenworks wanted me to make a video showing them myself not being able to keep up with the mower. I sent it back lol. This specific model solves both of those problems. Besides cutting the grass very nicely, its slow speed is truly slow, and it just goes faster and faster from there. It has a very nice range of speeds for walking, from an old persons gait to a young one that likes to go real fast. Good job. The backing up problem where the self propelled unit locks you up in an unsatisfactory way is just about gone on this model. Unless you back up immediately, it releases the wheels for you to pull the mower back in less than 2 seconds, or even faster. Both of the major problems for me are totally solved in this model. There are some bonuses too. Like the engineering department paid attention to resolving some things. The handles are nicer and has a really easy to use latch release system that will actually make me fold this mower up. Their other designs are cumbersome and I would never see myself folding it up. This model is far far superior in it's design. The darn thing has a light!!! Not a biggie, but makes the mower a little more endearing as a really good model with some serious high quality design attention paid to it. And whatever they did to the overall design, it now sounds like a Honda mower in regards to how smooth and solid they sounded compared to other mowers (the gas type). The only thing that still needs attention (but is NOT a deal breaker) is getting the battery in and out is hard to do with old fingers. It isn't the smartest design, but something to work on for their next model. All the basics are covered in terms of decent battery life (eventually should have a second one), mulching and grass catcher options, and so on. But if a mower is too fast of a walking seed, and you can't pull it out from under bushed then those things are deal breakers. This mower is a happy unit to own, at least for me!!

Ended up going back to gas-powered
This lawnmower lasted exactly one year and two weeks, which is not what you want to say about something that costs hundreds of dollars. I thought it would be better for the environment - and let's face it, a battery-powered mower is going to be superior to a gas- and oil-powered mower when it comes to sound and smell, even if it's not going to be as powerful or effective. But first and foremost, this mower had a headlight, because most people mow their lawns after midnight or something? The headlight made no sense, and you can't turn the thing off. So that useless headlight is going to be draining a battery that lasts 45 minutes if you're lucky. And Greenworks is lying - it takes at least 4 to 5 hours for that battery to recharge. I was almost relieved when the mower stopped working; I was tired of getting the front lawn and most of the two sides mowed before the battery died and then having to wait hours and hours to mow the back yard. I'm not crazy about having a gas-powered mower now, even if it has no useless headlight, is more efficient and faster, doesn't quit halfway through mowing the lawn. But I'll never go back to Greenworks.

Pretty nice machine
I put this to the test first time. Grass was a little taller and wet. In addition, I used the mulching feature instead of the bag or side. What happened? It stalled 3 times and the battery died right at the end. In all fairness, it was working hard. I won’t do that the next time but wanted to see what it could or couldn’t do. It’s a small yard but the battery might have lasted 25 minutes. I did use the self-propelled feature which drains the battery too. Assembly was pretty easy. Battery took about 2 hours to charge. It seems like a sturdy mower with the base being metal so the weight is similar to a conventional mower. Easy to adjust height. Noise is minimal but I wouldn’t mow too early because I have neighbors. They probably wouldn’t notice but I try to be respectful. All in, it’s a nice mower. Just don’t expect it to do what a gas powered mower won’t do either. I’ll update the more I use it with pros and cons. So far, I would recommend it for small yards. Update: second time using…finished my yard and only used one bar of the battery. Grass wasn’t as wet or as tall. No issues at all. Liking it so far!
