Thelma & Louise [DVD] [1991]

This 1991 crime drama features Thelma (Geena Davis) as a naïve, bored housewife and Louise (Susan Sarandon), an independent, world-weary waitress. Together the pair have arranged to get away on a weekend roadtrip but things soon go awry as these two ordinary women are put in an extra-ordinary situation that soon escalates out of control as the pair rediscover themselves.From the way the title sequence opens with it’s breath-taking landscape and musical score which draws you in, you know this is something above the norm. The title actually foreshadows the film itself, stating off grey and promising, blossoming in the middle and dark and brooding at the end. If the film has a flaw, it’s in the fact that almost all the men are negative, self obsessed types but in some ways that helps to highlight the changes we see in the women and despite their escalating criminal behaviour they remain ‘good at heart’ characters, keeping the support and attention of the audience.The 15 age rating is appropriate due to swearing and some scenes of graphic, physical and ‘adventure’ style violence, whilst the few sex scenes contain mild nudity. It’s a tale of self discovery, self fulfilment and friendship, deserving of a ***** and with a great, diverse soundtrack, it is highly recommended.

What a great film this is. It has a brilliant storyline and just wonderful ‘road movie scenery,’ - around Utah, Arkansas, Oklahoma & California. It certainly makes you realize what a huge country America is and what wonderful landscapes they still have, even if the ‘Great Plains’ are but a fraction of what they were in’Geronino’s’ time?The lead roles are just perfectly played and its action all the way. The climax is just perfect too. Who wouldn’t get to like these girls? Having said that this film must contain some of the best looking men any film could treat its female audience to? Oh come on gals – I just know you’d be line-dancing with them!I have watched more than a dozen or so, of the so called top road movies over the last couple of months, this is right up there with the best of them. It simply has everything. It’s a two hour blast and brilliantly put together.It didn’t manage to win any of the top awards but won plenty of the minor ones. It was a huge box office winner – trebling its budget outlay.

Up till today, I don't know why I love this movie so much. I've loved it since the first time I watched it in the 90s as an 11 year old. Maybe I love it because it can happen to anyone. It depicts how your whole life and existence can change in an instant. Especially in an instant of passion and rage. Maybe I love it because Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon are just such everyday people who manage to come across as unique- simple yet complex at the same time. Geena Davis is so naiive and lovable, but you just want to scream at her at some parts of the movie because their fate could have been different if she'd only just learned from her mistakes. I love the feeling of the journey, symbolized by the vintage thunderbird car, the vast roads and expansive scenery; captured in the way their clothes and make-up go from prim and proper to very basic; in the way Daryll goes from mistreating Thelma throughout the movie to crying for her at the very end. I can go on forever about the journey...about fate, friendship, relationships,patriarchy- but I'll stop there.I just love this movie...

One of my all time favourite films. Ms Sarandon and Davis offer up two tour de force performances. Extremely well written and fantastically directed Ridley Scott. A story of innocence lost, friendship, love, and female empowerment.

If you have never met Thelma and Louise you have missed a great film. Its never too late to catch up with them though .

So we ended up buying and watching movies from the 80's following an episode of Gogglebox. Love it from the best friends deciding on a road trip and never quite getting there - to the completely ignorant husband to the ditsy I almost got raped which started the whole chain of events off.

Thelma and Louise DVD is my parents favourite.Such avid fans, they have been keeping a look out for it on TV. So as a surprise for them I bought them the DVD so now they can watch it whenever they want!

A great film with superb actors in it, and everything that you don't want to happen does by the bucket load. You'll wanna watch it over and over.
