Introducing Little Clothbound Classics: irresistible, mini editions of short stories, novellas and essays from the world's greatest writers, designed by the award-winning Coralie Bickford-Smith. Celebrating the range and diversity of Penguin Classics, they take us from snowy Japan to springtime Vienna, from haunted New England to a sun-drenched Mediterranean island, and from a game of chess on the ocean to a love story on the moon. Beautifully designed and printed, these collectible editions are bound in colourful, tactile cloth and stamped with foil. Regarded as one of world literature's foremost novelists, Fyodor Dostoevsky's short stories are also some of the best ever written. 'White Nights' tells of love and loss on the streets of St. Petersburg, 'A Nasty Business' presents the hilarious tale of a general dropping in on the wedding of a subordinate, while 'The Meek One' is an existentialist tale of marriage and tragedy. Review: Dostoevsky is wonderful - The best novella Iโve ever read Review: Very Good - "only I would love you, I would love you so, that even if you still loved him, even if you went on loving the man I donโt know, you would never feel that my love was a burden to you."

This glimpse of the inside of 27 year old Dostoevskyโs head is enough to celebrate
For sure there is a sense of distance - of time, of place, of culture - which made some aspects of the first story 'White Nightsโ a little hard to digest. The narrator is unusual even for his own time and place - obsessive, lonely, highly emotional - but his desperate diatribes to the young woman he has fallen for, are melodramatic, somewhat repetitive and difficult to process. The second story โBobok' - where we get to overhear the conversations of the recently dead in a cemetery, just blew me away. How many times - as a frequenter of graveyards - have I wondered what the dead would tell us, and and what would they say to their near neighbours, if they could talk?! And, of course, they are just as they were when they lived, bickering, egotistical, small-minded. I will never think of the dead in quite the same way again...

Different
This was a different Dostoevsky story to any I've read. To think it was first published over 170 years ago, it's hard to know if the interactions between the two protagonists is based on any reality of the times. Taking place over four days, the young man and woman go through the gamut of emotions and the love expressed between them seems quite remarkable, especially as they are both so young and inexperienced in relationships. Didn't really work for me, but interesting nonetheless.
