UFO : LIGHTS OUT (1977) ...........................2024 2 CD REMASTER
I have included my review of the 2008 remaster below. I cant really add much more. I agree (with the previous reviewer) that there isnt an discernible difference between the remasters.. both sound awesome. The 3 bonus tracks are interesting. Disc 2, previously available on the 'Official Bootleg' box set sounds cleaner ,sharper and excellent. As with the other deluxe editions, the booklet is average and in a fold out poster format,i prefer booklets, still it would be wrong to take a star off for that. This is one of the best albums from the 70's. and well worth buying again ha ha.Original review for 2008 remaster: 'Pretty much the perfect album and indeed many fans choice as best UFO disc,i still think 'Force It' pushes it very close. Its actually quite hard to convey in print just how wonderful this album is,its really 8 tracks of a band at their absolute creative peak!Opening with 'Too Hot To Handle & Just Another Suicide' the lads show they've got this down pat stunning rocker followed by the commercial hook, how many band s would kill to be able to open their albums like this, the aforementioned tracks contain every UFO trade mark and for the last 30 years this album has been milked by many a band to develop their own career,Def Lepard anyone?,side one of the original vinyl closed with the stunning 'Try Me' with typical jaw dropping guitar solo from Michael Schenker and the anthemic 'Lights Out',(an interesting aside, in the booklet the ridiculous original review by Geoff Barton,3 stars and denigrating Try Me!!!!)Side 2 opened with 'Gettin Ready' which should have ripped up the charts,im sure had Aerosmith/Van Halen/Kiss or Ted Nugent recorded it' america would have fallen to its knees, still,'Alone Again' is a faithful cover version then its back to the rock god arena with the excellent 'Electric Phase' and sublime 'Love To Love',really this is music to die for,had Zeppelin recorded the last two tracks we would have feted them for ever.Bonus tracks : 4 decent live recordings including Love To Love and Try Me with Schenker manfully trying to reproduce the album solos in the live arena,on reflection this disc is so good that the live tracks aren't needed but a nice touch none the less, this is a must have disc.

Brilliant sounding on Vinyl for a 47 year-old album
Lovely triple vinyl package which sounds really great, likely because there are so few tracks per side that the vinyl grooves are large. Although I was aware of UFO as a teenager in the mid-80s (I’m 55), I didn’t really get into them until about 15 years ago. Had bought all the Zeppelin, Sabbath and Purple albums so then took it upon myself to go to the 2nd tier of British classic rock bands, namely UFO, Nazareth, Uriah Heep, Thin Lizzy. I quickly came to the realization that UFO are so under-rated. If you are more into hard rock and not so bothered about blues, and don’t want it too heavy, then you will probably like UFO more than Zeppelin, Sabbath and Purple. Phil Mogg has a brilliant voice and in his prime on this album. And Michael Schenker is one of the best guitarists of the 70s and 80s. All the tracks are good. I even like the Love cover. The slow number, “Try Me” is a special favourite with the lovely piano and extended guitar solo at the end. The 2-vinyl live album included sounds great and adds a different dimension to the songs so is a great addition rather than just padding. Will likely be a year before “Obsession” is released which I like just as much as “Lights Out”. Keep them coming, Chrysalis!

Holly Molly
I knew the Lights Out record and between this one and Obsession I would not be able to say witch is the best UFO studio album but with this remaster you get a 1977 live recording and holly molly this is Strangers quality!!!

Classic album given makeover.
UFO's best selling and one of their best loved albums, here given a remastering which gives it a crisper, clearer sound. Featuring some of the band's best loved songs such as opener, Too Hot To Handle, the storming title track and the epic Love To Love, it also boasts some great deeper cuts such as Just Another Suicide, the orchestral Ballad, Try Me, Gettin' Ready and Electric Phase. This 3 LP package comes beautifully presented and with 2 albums worth of live recordings from the Lights Out tour and featuring some rarely heard live versions of songs like the aforementioned Try Me and Gettin' Ready. A must for any UFO fan.

Great album remastered with superb additional live concert cd
A great package with new artwork, an explanation of how the music was put together, a great sounding record with an additional cd recording of the tour to accompany the album. Good value for the money and delivered the day after i ordered it.

Could this be the definitive version to get?
Not sure that the main album sounds that much different to the 2008 edition, however I think the live disc does sound better than the one in the offcial bootleg set and Try me seems to be less jarring even though it still seems to be missing a bit of the piano intro - unless tha's actually how it was played, of course. So bottom line, is it worth it, for a big UFO fan like me, absolutely, to get IMO the best sounding Roundhouse live and to have it packaged together with the album that was being toured, for the casual fan if you havent got this album yet then buy this version, if you're a middling fan who only wants just the album and isnt bothered with the live stuff then you may not need it.

Live at the Roundhouse 1977
I bought this for the second disc live at the Roundhouse 1977Even though I have several verses of this I was hoping the sound would be better than the previous versions and to my ears the recording is as good as anything from the Strangers in the Night box set and definitely worth buying if you're thinking about itThe lights out album itself sounds great but always was a great sounding album

UFO's Crowning Achievement?
I cognizantly discovered UFO around 1981-1982 after hearing about them in magazines such as Hit Parader. I was a fan of Scorpions with the eruption of the Blackout lp onto the music scene and began reading about Rudolph Schenker's younger brother, Michael; famous for his work with UFO.As such, I sought out UFO to hear for myself what all the fuss was about. I vividly recall an article in Hit Parader listing, up to that point, the 25 greatest hard rock albums. Lights Out was listed and the article raved about Michael Schenker's guitar playing. About that same time Michael's solo project, MSG (the Michael Schenker Group) had a song called "On & On" that was getting airplay on local FM radio and I thought it was great.Unknowingly, I had already heard UFO with radio airplay of the song, "Too Hot to Handle" from this album way back in the late 70's. I suppose I would have been in 5th grade and mostly only knew the music that came on the radio while in the car with my parents. I recall liking the song but at that age, hard rock was not yet my thing.Fast forward to the early 80's again. I had to find out what this Lights Out album was like; however, as a high school freshman with no money aside from a $5 weekly allowance, it was tough to scrape up the money to get a copy of Lights Out at my local record store. In those pre-Internet days it was hard to get info and I made a mistake in my first UFO purchase; I found a cassette of UFO's "No Place to Run" album for $2.99 at Sears. With no info other than a tiny band image on the cover, I bought it thinking, "this is UFO; it must also have that Michael Schenker guy on it." While I liked that cassette, the guitar playing sounded different than the MSG music that I had heard. I soon discovered that Paul Chapman had been the guitarist on my cassette and not Schenker!Shortly thereafter, I scraped up enough money to finally get the Lights Out lp and I instantly became a fan of both UFO as a band and Michael Schenker as an individual musician. Truthfully, I had aleady been given the MSG album with "On & On" as a b-day present by that point, so Schenker was quickly becoming my favorite guitarist. His work on Lights Out revealed to me why many hard rock enthusiasts considered this album one of the best in the genre. It has a bit of everything; scorching rockers like "Too Hot to Handle" and the title track, heartfelt and unique ballads such as "Try Me," and even a true epic masterpiece in the song "Love to Love." I loved the weird album cover by Hipgnosis, too.I believe this is the 6th copy of this great album that I've purchased in my life and I don't think the mix is any different than the great 2009 remaster. The best reason for a long-time fan to grab this deluxe reissue is for the full 1977 Roundhouse concert.A few of these tracks have been available for many years on various official releases; however, to my knowledge, this is the first time that the entire concert has been available (not including bootlegs). This concert is fantastic and contains several tracks that UFO rarely play live (namely, "Gettin' Ready," "On with the Action" and "Try Me." ). After a full listen, it's easy to see why the band rarely recorded "Gettin' Ready" and "Try Me." These are clearly the weakest tracks of this otherwise stellar concert. "On with the Action" rocks as do all the other songs the band performed that night. This is about a year before the shows that would become the vaunted Strangers in the Night live album and it's interesting to hear the differences in the arrangements of some of the now-classic tracks that also appeared on Strangers. This edition has a cool period promo mini-poster though sadly, they put it on the back of the liner notes. I'm debating whether or not to laminate the mini-poster at the cost of permanently losing the album liner notes. Chrysalis did the same thing on the deluxe release of the Force It album. I don't yet own the deluxe No Heavy Petting album since it didn't really offer any material that I don't already own so I'm curious if that cd also contains a poster? To wrap up, I highly recommend this edition of Lights Out. Consensus among most UFO fans / reviewers is that Lights Out is probably their greatest studio album. My pick tends to change from one year to the next but this is definitely the album that opened up a whole new world to me.To some, this album may seem a bit thin sounding in the production, mostly because the producer, Ron Nevison, had Schenker play his guitar parts through a tiny, Pignose amplifier. Nevertheless, the album has a distinct charm and great songwriting. As such, it's easy to see why many believe this to be UFO's crowning achievement.Update: I checked out my 2009 copy of Lights Out and discovered that on that release, the bonus live tracks (Too Hot to Handle, Try Me, Lights Out and Gettin Ready) state that they are from the Roundhouse in 1976; however, that is an error. These tracks are from the 77 Roundhouse performance (the same concert contained on this 2024 release). This error is noteworthy since someone's decision to purchase one version over another may be altered. You still get more songs from the 77 performance on this newer release but not as many as you may have thought for those that already own the 09 release. Also of note, this new release erroneously credits Phil Mogg as the composer of Just Another Suicide when in fact, keyboardist/rhythm guitarist Paul Raymond (R.I.P.) wrote this song.

Very enjoyable
I didn't find much of a difference in the sound quality of the first disc however the hero of this set is disc two. A tremendous set with some real jems in it. The overall sound quality of the live set is fantastic.
