This book has some maps
This is a great book about Italy . It’s 987 pages of information. It did take a long time to get here but we’ll worth the wait. The book includes some maps and a few pictures.

About Internal Italy
This has really good information about transportation, lodging, meals, activities, festivals, local customs, and specifics about the cities by region along with a really big pull-out map of Rome in the very back. I'm taking a cruise so a lot of it didn't apply to me, but I still found it helpful. I wish it had more information about activities, like excursions, tours, tour operators, types of activities, etc. Can you imagine that this book doesn't mention anything about beaches, boating, fishing or diving and it's on the Mediterranean Ocean? It's about internal Italy. There is miniscule mention when it reviews Sardinia.

Gave as gift
I purchased this book as a gift for my brother and his wife, who are going to Italy for their honeymoon. Although I haven’t read this one personally, I have a few other Lonely Planet travel books and find them very helpful, and often have off the beaten path recommendations! Would recommend these books to anyone planning to travel, but unsure of where to go!

Packed with information: highly recommended.
This book is packed with information on traveling to Italy. Due to the sheer size of the country, it must of necessity touch on the most popular and interesting places to visit, and cover them adequately rather than exhaustively. We combined this guidebook with smaller books focused on particular cities we're visiting.

Terrific guide to use while in Italy
My wife and I used this guide extensively while we were in Italy and it was invaluable. Well written, with just the right amount of detail and easy to use maps. Really enhanced the quality of our touring. Probably not the best for hotel recommendations, but those can be made via many online travel booking web sites.

Loaded With Information But Heavy
Overall this seems to be a very comprehensive guide but as I've not yet left for Italy I can only give it a neutral recommendation for now. The guide is very thick and heavy so I opted to return the paper version and download the electronic version on my Kindle.

For the Independent Traveler
A book with something for everyone. Provides information on transportation, remote areas to see, suggestion for avoiding long lines even where to find a laundry mat. This is a must have for people who are independent travelers longing for the best way to see and discover Italy.

Thorough, good mapping and excellent cultural advice as always
I work in the industry and I always use Lonely Planet if I am travelling somewhere without database coverage. For the lay traveller, I am always impressed by the sections on socio-cultural awareness, gender, LGBT+ advice and safety advice. The mapping is good and I was impressed with the city guides for Italy for etc. You may wish to photocopy the maps before you leave though so you can fold them up in your bag and write all over them rather than have them in the book. The Italian edition is quite bulky to take in your daybag all the time. Also, from a security point, I wouldn't want to get this sort of book out too obviously in some places for fear of being targeted by muggers or con artists etc. Vatican City, Florence etc.

Comprehensive but needs updating
It's great. But the reality about getting to see the iconic sites of Italy (the Colleseum etc) is out of date. Travellers need more up to date advice on how to navigate the mine field of tour operator who buy up all the tickets (or so they say) and flog them at 4, 8, 10x the price

Without any doubts, one of the best around!
You really can't go wrong with a lonely planet travel guide! Our trip to Italy was full of adventures and hidden gems found in the pages of this book. Would definitely recommend!

Too big an area to cover well - chose a more localised one
I always swear by a ‘lonely planet’ guide but this one wasn’t up to the usual standard. I think it has been thinned out too much to fit everything in. Best getting the versions on the more localised areas.
