Is it ok to stand the airer on carpet while in use?

Yes, absolutely fine on carpet or Lino or laminate floor, only the cross bars get moderately hot. Just needs to be near a socket outlet!

How hot does this get?

Not too hot you can touch it, it won’t burn you . It does dry your clothes though

I've seen reviews it has left marks or even damaged clothes? Is this common? Is it really better than a tumble dryer? I'm trying to decide which one.

Well I don’t know where you have heard that as it is not true. It is entirely different from a tumble dryer it is a clothes horse that gets warm.
