Discover the history of design with this gorgeous visual celebration of key pieces, movements, and designers, from the Arts and Craft movement to the digital age. Arranged chronologically, Design traces the evolution of design from its roots to the present day, from early chairs, pottery, and homewares to cars, graphic design, and product design. It introduces all the key designers, manufacturers, and objects, illustrating how and why different styles emerged and became popular. It also provides a fascinating insight into design movements, showing how each one began and explaining its philosophy and visual style, from the Arts and Crafts movement to mid-century modern and contemporary. Featuring expert analysis, stunning photography, and a huge range of objects both familiar and extraordinary, Design explains what makes a truly great design and reveals the hidden stories behind the everyday things all around us. With profiles of famous designers and manufacturers, such as William Morris, the Bauhaus, Alvar Aalto, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Vitra, and stunning images of iconic buildings and interiors, it provides a glorious and comprehensive view of classic design across the last two centuries. Review: Awesome book! - Best book I have ever seen on the design of an extraordinarily wide range of works from 1850 to the present! Extraordinary photos, wonderful biographies of key designers, clear and intelligent grouping of works into eras and styles. Awesome diversity, including almost every aspect of items shaping our lives: furniture, lights, appliances, tableware, transportation, decorative pottery, cameras, clocks, fabrics, wallpaper, posters, typewriters, jewelry, radios, coffee/tea kettles, and on and on seemingly endlessly. All are clearly documented by time and designer, with a wonderful separate A to Z compendium of designer biographies at the very end of the book. If you like design of everyday objects, you will love this book. Review: Beautiful illustrations and composition - This is truly a beautiful visual history of design. The book touches on all phases of design with brief informative narratives for each genre and high-quality photographs. I purchased this as a graduation gift for a student of design, but it's so interesting, I will buy a copy for our household too. Highly recommend!

Fabulous book!
I love this book! It is much larger than I anticipated and after opening it, I couldn’t put it down. So many fabulous pictures of beautifully designed home goods, electronics, etc. and the evolution of those designs. I will go back and read it as well now that I have browsed the pics on every page. Fast shipping and very nicely packaged as well. Thank you!

Beautiful, informing and absorbing.
Beautiful, well put together book. Larger than I expected, this is a coffee table book. I don't think anyone would be disappointed in this book either for themselves or received as a gift. It's very informative and absorbing to look at. Highly recommend.

Good Survey of Industrial Design from the Arts and Crafts
Good Survey of Industrial Design from the Arts and Crafts. If you are expecting in depth content regarding Designers and Movements this is not the book for you. Great photos and design and layout. Has a slight European tilt as I was surprised Charles and Ray Eames and George Nelson were minimally mentioned. In the highlighted spread on the history of the chair where was nothing from the Charles and Ray Eames. Still a great survey.

Recommended for Design Students and Enthusiasts
Design offers a definitive visual history of all essential design movements and characters over time. Making this a great book for any design student or enthusiast who seeks to extend their knowledge of design. The book offers a breakdown of all movements ranging from Arts and Crafts to Postmodern and Contemporary, whilst providing detailed analysis of the most iconic designers motifs and products throughout eras. The book is well written with detailed illustrations and photographs, set out in a very function fashion making it a pleasurable read. I would highly recommend this book to any design enthusiast or those looking to extend upon design knowledge. GCSE and A level students would especially find this book beneficial as a majority of AQA's and Edexcel's Product Design key areas of study are featured.
