Author Trevor Yorke takes you on a tour of all aspects of the Georgian and Regency house and provides a comprehensive guide to the homes and houses of this notable period. The book is divided into three sections: the first outlines the history of the period; the second takes you inside the different rooms, explains what they were used for and how they would have appeared; the final section contains a quick reference guide with notes on dating houses, suggestions for further reading, a glossary and details of places to visit. BRING THE PAST TO LIFE - Uncover the architectural secrets of a golden age. Discover how elegance, refinement and beautiful proportions have made this period an inspiration for later architects and a popular choice for today's house buyer. DETAILED ILLUSTRATIONS - Packed with easy-to-understand and intricately detailed drawings, highlighting key features and notable aspects from the buildings we see around us. BONUS INFO - Includes a glossary of unfamiliar terms and details of places to visit. Review: clear and concise reference book - Faced with the choice of several reference books on Georgian architecture I picked this as you could look at it via the 'preview'button so I knew roughly what to expect. It's a handy small size so it can be tucked in a bag or large pocket if you like getting out and about looking at various buildings. There's a huge amount of photos with many done as detailed close-ups and I found it good they are all back and white so your eye is not detracted by colour. The author takes individual components such as doors, windows, roofs etc and talks in detail about them but also goes through the compositon and architectural decor of various rooms.I puchased it specifically as a reference book to decorate my Georgian style dolls house but it's a must-have for anyone generally interested in architecture. Review: Excellent - Both this, and other architectural books from Countryside Books are excellent. I am an interior design student and found this book indispensable when studying the Georgian era (I also used 'British Architectural Styles' by Trevor Yorke - which I would also recommend highly). The illustrations are very good, and the text to the point and readable - although this is a 'simple' book, it is by no means 'simplistic', and is a perfect introduction to the subject. Small enough to put in your bag (or a large pocket!)- it is invaluable for taking out and about with you if you are interested in historical architecture.

Great information in a compact form
This book has been very helpful in researching the Georgian and Regency (Late Georgian) styles of London. It contains both illustrations of how rooms would look as well as black and white photographs of real details to assist in identifying buildings. It also has a few illustrations of interior details like fireplaces, mouldings, ironworking and stairs as well as how certain aspects of the house worked mechanically. It's 128 pages including the index.

Houses into Homes
One of those lovely little books with loads of detail. I write Regency romance so this book is a welcome addition to my personal reference library. From Palladio and Inigo Jones to the finishes on stone facades and fireplaces, this book has been lovingly compiled by author Trevor Yorke.

This is a wonderful book! We have purchased a Georgian house that needs to be restored. This book has given me so much information about what is appropriate, why the houses are designed as they are, the historical context in which the designs evolved, and so much more. I appreciate it as a guide to design, but as a history buff, I appreciate it purely as a history book. Very easy to read with good definition of terms and diagrams that make the text truly make sense (a picture is worth a thousand words!)

Regency Interiors and Exteriors
This is a tiny book, an easy read, and includes pictures and descriptions. It's great for those studying the period who want to know how the richer folks lived during the period. It doesn't cover Regency hovels, which might be something to add in a new edition. I really liked the floor plans differentiating stand alone houses and terrace houses. I'd love to see this in more detail. It would also be nice to include a section just on London Squares, with more info on the central parks within the squares. Great starter book for history or architecture buffs.

Good little book. Lots of pictures and descriptions. This was exactly what I was looking for when writing Regency romances. Loved all the various pictures so I can pick and choose what I need.

Must Read for Anyone Researching the Period
I grabbed this book as a research tool, fully expecting it to be dry reading. Happy surprise! This is a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes of the intimate daily lives of centuries-old England. I'd go so far as to see it's a must-read for anyone researching the period and wanting to gain crucial facts for writing about it. The author covers architectural styles, building materials, interior decorating, and room-by-room discussions of urban and country homes.
