Almost Awful
I had an epiphany while watching this and comparing it with its much more succesful predecessor Last Exile: The Complete Series , produced by the same company and by many of the same people or admirers thereof: good, talented people botch sequels in ways completely different from bad, talentless ones. Bad people botch sequels in obvious ways by repeating whatever they think worked until they run it right into the ground, but good people know better than to do that. Rather than following the obvious recipe for destruction, good people make significant changes from the original. Trouble is, if you've got a brilliant something to start with, and you change it too much, you can force it bad without truly realizing it. I think that is what happened here.In the original a young couple, just beginning to understand falling in love, are the main protagonists, and much of the tension in the series comes from their interaction with others who are doing the same with them. But in this series, the main protagonists are three girls: Fam Fan Fan and Giselle Collette, BFF's for life, and Millia Il Velch Cutrettola Turan, the Turanian princess these vespa vanship pilots rescue. They face the problems of friendship in many different ways, but not those of love.In the original (once identified) our heroes face a devilish sicko of a villain with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. But in this series, so much effort is put into confusing the viewer that despite committing acts much more heinous, the villains' motives and ultimate intentions are utterly unclear. In the original, once a certain point is passed, the victorious alliance is slowly but steadily formed and then brought deliberately into combat. But in this series the confusion is so intense that one never knows which side of the conflict will be chosen and when (one particularly suspicious group ends up switching sides twice in one episode). In the original though there is some disagreement everyone eventually realizes that this conflict will be settled by war. But in this series there is a good deal of dithering over whether violence is ever the proper solution, despite the much higher death toll, almost to the end. Finally, in the original, of the identifiable characters, those who lived and those who died make a certain kind of sense. But in this series so many characters die pointlessly and unreasonably that other characters are talking about it. It is particularly worth noting what happens to Fam Fan Fan, a fairly well adjusted orphan, who receives a locket informing her of who she is, sent just prior to the locket giver committing suicide voluntarily (and pointlessly) on the field of battle and received thereafter. She is reduced to tears while viewers are infuriated.Note: Last Exile: Fam, the Silver Wing, Season 2, Part 1 (Blu-ray/DVD Combo) and Last Exile: Fam, The Silver Wing, Season 2, Part 2 (Blu-ray/DVD Combo) were the previously existing halves that a comparison of prices will probably reveal you won't want to buy instead of this combo set.
