Great Overall Value - Very Pleased Overall
I requested this machine as a gift to replace my 10yo Brother color laser MFC machine. I waited to play with this printer for about six weeks before I wrote my review. After six weeks of use, I must say, I'm very pleased with this machine, and I think it's a great overall value. 1. I'm really pleased with the print quality. So far, the print quality has greaty exceeded the print quality of the Brother machine that I replaced, and it's on par with the quality of the more expensive workstation laser printers that I have at work. 2. I spent quite a bit of time looking into the difference between this model (MF424dw) and the related model (MF426dw), which is about $100 more. To spare others the hassle: I learned that the only difference is that the -26 model is loaded with Adobe Postscript. I didn't know what that meant in terms of functionality, but a graphic designer friend told me that it really means that it provides expanded printing functionality for non-standard fonts, etc. He told me that even he doesn't own a printer with Postscript, and that if he needs to print anything that might require Postscript, he just prints it at a FedEx store. So far, I haven't printed anything that would've required PostScript (i.e., I usually just print stuff from Microsoft Word and other standard software), so it's been a good decision to save the $100. 3. I've been pleased with the functionality. I initially experienced some funky scanning-related glitches. I went to Canon's website, and I discovered that there was an updated version of the scanner driver thing. So, I downloaded that, and thereafter, it worked just fine. In my view, the basic features have been really easy to use. If I want to print something from my phone, my phone detects the printer, I click print, and the printer prints the document really quickly (particularly relative to the printer that I replaced). The basic features on the device are also intuitive. My wife (who isn't technologically inclined) and my 7yo daughter have been able to figure out how to print, make copies, and scan on their own and without me having to show them. 4. The build quality feels and sounds a little flimsy -- but, yeesh, what do you expect for a $200 printer. So, I'm ultimately content with that for the cost. 5. It's not a dynamic that's unique to Canon or this printer -- but, what's irritating is that a high-yield genuine Canon replacement cartridge costs almost as much as the machine itself. And, Canon lets you know that it's monitoring whether you're using a genuine Canon cartridge, as when you check the toner level on the machine or desktop, you get a message that acknowledges that you're using a genuine Canon cartridge. I have always bought a manufacturer's genuine toner cartridges -- but I'm not sure that I'll be able to bring myself to pay almost as much for the cartridge as I did for the machine. So, I'm inclined to buy a MUCH, MUCH lower-priced off-brand cartridge, just to see what happens. Under the circumstances, I think it's probably worth the risk. UPDATE [2/4/2020]: I have been using the printer for more than 15 months now, and I continue to be pleased with it. The toner cartridge that came with the printer lasted us for about 14 months, with regular / normal family use. As noted above, I decided to buy a knock-off replacement cartridge, given that the high-yield Canon-certified cartridges cost about 75% of what I paid for the printer. I have not noticed any difference at all in the print quality or in the function of the printer since I insstalled the knock-off cartridge, so it's looking like buying the knock-off cartridge was worth the risk and savings. UPDATE [5/17/24]: This bad boy is still going strong. In addition to typical family home use for which I bought it, this became my primary printer while working from home through and beyond the pandemic. This machine has turned out to be an outstanding value.

A mid-duty all-in-one that punches way above its class
Nice all in one that has a foot print and solid feel not unlike the old, bulletproof HP 4000 series Laser Jets. 20 minutes to set up to run using a Windows 10 desktop. Fast (really instant!) print, copy and surprisingly, scan speeds. Easy to use and articulate touch screen controls. Initial power up or wake up within 10 seconds. Totally capable of working well within the standard setup protocol. If you have a multi station intranet with specific needs, there are many setup options to keep your IT department happy. Observations: Make sure you download newest firmware (via the printer touch pad) and latest software (via your computer). I'm using 5g wifi to interface. No connectivity drops when sleeping or fully turned off. Speed is virtually indistinguishable from a hardwired interface. Plus I get to print remotely using Google print...priceless! Do yourself a favor and use the WPS "push button method" to initially connect to your router- easy peasy. Pay attention to miriad paper options that specify both type and weight of your copy paper. Don't tempt fate printing on 24# Bond when the machine is set on 16# recycled. I can only guess there would be bleed/fusing issues and maybe even feed problems due to this operator error. Ps. Did I mention how cool it is freaking out unsuspecting office peeps when I shoot something to the printer via Google Print.. You Tube worthy!

Perfect printing and scanning, but complex, non-intuitive features and menu
Overall, I really love this. You cannot go wrong with Canon. The printing is reliable and it does double-sided, where you can choose if the second side is upside down or not. Scanning is easy and the images straight, both manual and automatic document feeder. It has a large (double?) capacity toner cartridge included, so it will last a long time before needing a replacement. It was hard at first to print envelopes since you have to go into the menu and choose rough surface (and then remember to change it back). And you have to figure out how the manual feeder works. The first envelope came out with bad print, but now they print fine. The only bad thing is there are a lot of options, so the menu is long and non-intuitive. But it is also easy since it is touch screen and wakes up instantly. In a way, it is also good you have a lot of options. I also go back and forth between toner saver and full quality print. To toggle the options, you have to make seven (7!!) mouse clicks to do it on the printer driver menu. What's up with that? There was also a hiccup installing the drivers on my laptop, which was different than my desktop, but I figured it out. The solution was not in the manual. It also is heavy (thank goodness the USPS man brought up to my second-floor apartment) and a little pricey, but it is well built, and I love it.

Really good, but Amazon has raised the price since I bought it
I bought this on Amazon in December for $204.99, including a cartridge. Since then the price has gone up to $349. Print quality is good. Physical assembly was a little slow because the images in the manual are not very helpful. We have all three main OSs in different machines in the household. Setup with OSX and Windows was so easy I don't even remember it. Setup with Linux was easier than average. I have not printed enough to estimate the cost of ink, but Consumer Reports rated it fairly cheap. If you don't need to print in color, this is a much cheaper option than an inkjet including ink costs. Update: life of *OEM* ink cartridge was at least 500 pages. This is much more economical than an inkjet printer.

Getting Scanner to connect to wireless laptop CONSTANT issue
I would never buy this printer again. One of the main reasons for buying this printer was so that I could scan medium to large size documents with ease - a limitation with smaller personal printers. I have had constant issues with the scan function. I found that I am by no means alone with this issue. There are lots of complaints on this issue that I found post purchase. It is a recurring complaint amongst buyers and unless Cannon is deaf and blind it knows that there is an issue as well but has done nothing. I didnt spend my money to deal repeatedly with tech support and to waste hours of time. Cannon has likely lost a customer for life as there are lots of companies competing in this space.

It's supposed to be a BLACK AND WHITE printer!!!
Added in edit, 10/31/2019, Halloween (It figures!): I was about to give it away. I mean, really! At my age, this printer could outlast me and I didn't want to spend the rest of my life hating it. Better to write it off in exchange for the reduction in stress. But, I've given the settings one more try and may have gotten lucky: Pages in actual black and white. So, the overall rating goes to 3 stars. One of two things will happen: (1) I will have found a cure, in which case the rating will likely move to 5 stars or (2) the cure will have failed and the rating will move back to 1 star permanently. Watch this space. I almost sent it back! It's an excellent printer, but a black and white printer is supposed to print in black and white. If I'd wanted a grey scale printer, I'd have bought a grey scale printer. My old printer finally wore out. The new LaserJets use proprietary cartridges that involve transplanting a chip to use non-OEM cartridges, so I tried this one. The second thing I found was that documents that had printed in B&W on my old printer were now coming out in a grey scale that rendered them unreadable for practical purposes. I almost sent it back but after many trying attempts rooting around various setting, I was able to find some that allowed me to finally print in B&W. Why is this next to impossible? Why not make this a simple top level setting? The first thing I found was that I should have rad more carefully. New printers tend to be lighter, especially at the price that was listed when I bought it. 36 lbs item weight; 49 lbs item weight. That's the main reason I didn't return it. It was so much working getting it upstairs to my office, I couldn't bear the thought of having to get it back downstairs and reboxing it. Now that it's working, it's mostly okay. It's fast, and documents some out in B&W. However, documents printed directly from Notepad or my text processor are printed in a font that seems faint. I would STRONGLY recommend not buying this printer without testing it first by having it print a few of your typical documents (that you might bring with you on a thumb drive). That's what I'd do if I had to do it again. Who knows? Maybe all current printers are like this. I wish my old printer were still among the land of the living. Also, FWIW, I began this review thinking that I couldn't award 5 stars for all the grief it gave me, so I started with 4. As I typed, it dropped to 3, then to 2, and there's a part of me that wants to go to 1 because I'd likely never have bought it had I tried it in advance. The only way I'd have bought it would have been if no other printer printed like my old printer. I'd even have put up with extracting chips from LaserJet cartridges. Did I just type that? Sigh. 1 star. I'll change it to 5 if someone shows me something that I missed that can finally correct all of my B&W issues.

Buy it again for small professional office? Yes!
TLDR: Read the manual, download the drivers from Canon, yes I’d buy it again. Bought this for a small professional office. The Canon is tasked with light duty use as a secondary/back-up printer and scanner. Easy to set-up although scanning to a network drive is not intuitive. Can also set to scan to an FTP server. I still haven't taken the time to fully customize the settings; you can change everything from security settings to the home screen layout. Note: I am not an IT professional. Printer setup using wifi on a Mac took about 5 minutes for basic configuration. Before I even received the printer I downloaded the print and scanner drivers from Canon’s website. (There is a fax driver available also.) These are found on the Drivers tab under Drivers & Downloads. Get the Setup Utility which is on the Software tab. Install the drivers. There’s a tab on the support page for Manuals. I selected the pdf User Guide and it opened in a separate browser window. Look at the security section, especially if you’re not operating behind a firewall. Because I had the drivers already loaded on my Mac the setup was really simple. The printer arrived and I powered it up. I input the wifi credentials on the printer screen. Opened up system preferences on my Mac and clicked “+” to add a printer. The MF424dw was there in the dropdown menu. Click. Done. Printed my first document. Printing was so easy that I tried to scan, also via wifi. This was simple to initiate from my Mac by using the Apple utility. But what if I wanted to start the scan from the Canon? No intuitive way to do that, my computer wasn't showing up. What if I wanted to change the destination location? (OK, this last one you can do from the Apple scan utility.) At this point I spent a few minutes reading the User Manual. I was short on time so I called Canon support. Got a live person in under a minute. Got an answer in under 5 minutes. Trouble-free scanning. Open Finder, go to Applications and select Canon MF Scan Utility. At the top left there are 3 icons. To create custom settings, choose the middle icon. This will allow you to preset scan settings. I wanted the ability to save scans locally and to the network. I also wanted the ability to save b&w scans as .pdf files and color scans as JPEGs. These settings all show up when I go to the Canon and select scan, then select Computer as destination, then select type of scan. Standby mode is silent and the machine is very quick to wake from sleep. In this case RTFM is good advice. You can customize the display panel. You can set user restrictions. You can set pins and document security. You can get into all of the setting menus. You can change image quality and adjust print density. There’s a lot of customization available. I also give 5 starts to customer support. I’m still learning all of the capabilities of this machine but at this point I’d buy it again.

This printer is a great value! In general I am very pleased with this printer and my experience. This is a solid machine with some impressive features like automatic double sided printing, double sided copying, double sided scanning, and double sided faxing! I run Windows 10 pro, and some printers have trouble with Windows 10. So far this printer has given me no trouble and I have tested every function (print, copy, scan, and fax). The machine seems well built and is heavier than other multi-function printers I have experienced. I like heavy. I did a network installation that went very smoothly. The MF424dw installs fairly easily though some computer experience helps (e.g., knowing that the computer must be configured as well as the printer (like adding a printer using the Windows Control Panel)). If you can't get a function to work and you have followed the Canon "Getting Started" instructions, think about what settings the computer needs to interface with a new peripheral. I find the (color) display sequences to be a little counter intuitive and use a touch screen stylus to press the buttons to be sure I get the correct setting - particularly during configuration. I'm sure I will get used to the display as time goes on. Finally, if you feel there is not enough information in the multi-lingual green covered "Getting Started" paper document packed with the printer, load the companion CD and look at the comprehensive 700+ page English language "MF424dw Users Guide". Embedded in this Users Guide is a 96 page "Setting Up" document which is a lot less intimidating than 700 pages and has more detail than paper Getting Started booklet.

Qualité d’impression variable
Impression ok sur papier ordinaire, par contre sur papier plus épais, laisse des traces d’encre. Pour les copies, le calibrage n’est pas très bon, les copies ne sont pas droite.
