Oz - Season 6 [DVD]

Going out on a high
This collection of the last season of Oz generally does the whole series justice. There are some major plot jumps in order to provide a small level of closure for a series that quit when it was ahead, but due to the interlinked and multiple storylines each epsiode throughout the six seasons involved, they get away with it. I would argue that OZ is from my point of view the most underated product from HBO, and this is a just reward for those who stayed with the show throughout, even though it quite unfashionably makes it viewers think and recognise the world is not black and white. The ending may make a few people feel unfufilled and lack closure for them, but I think this is in keeping with the ethos that nothing has a nice fairytale ending and no one is immune from moral and ethical contradictions. It is a pity OZ ended but at least it did not taint it's legacy unlike other shows that didn't know when to go.

Another great season and a very 'knowing' ending
There are better shows (at least, ones -I- consider better) but not even Twin Peaks took as many chances or was ever as brave with its storylines. This final season includes McManus painting a maze on a floor as an aid to self-awareness and, in true Oz-style-nutso-fashion, proves useful to several inmates. There's a play which is used to good effect (hint: it's Macbeth)......And there are deaths. Many, many deaths. For those who don't like the more outrageous storylines, there are quite a few areas in season 6 to dislike, but the Cloutier plot is resolved in an earth-bound but still gratifying manner. Whatever dips and bumps there are in this final season, the last two or three episodes help to show that Oz was a great show that could handle satire, social commentary, self referential humour and traditional drama in a way that made it a truly unique experience.

Good season, not as good as previous ones
As a fan of this show, and someone who has seen all the previous seasons, this one was kind of a let down. It is still a good season, but certainly not one of the best. I liked the finale, I think it fit the show very well, and the show did have some great moments this season. I bought this DVD to find out how the show would end, and was happy with the ending.

On to the bitter end
Despite the fact that the storylines become more compressed and implausible as the drama reaches its final season, it remains compulsive viewing and I watched it through to the end ... the strength lies in the quality of the supporting cast, a grotesque collection of freaks and psychopaths ... Vernon Schillinger is my all-time favourite villain, although I was sorry to have to bid farewell to Simon Adebisi in the previous season. In reality this show has been not so much a prison drama, but more of a commentary on the interaction between the different sub-groups in American society as a whole ... and the conclusion is remorselessly pessimistic.

A weakish 6th series, but a (largely) satisfactory ending.
Far too many characters killed off in an offhand way that suggested the writers were trying to finish up fast, the usual neglected and illogical story lines, and a huge maze that served as some sort of metaphor for the characters' state of mind. On the plus side, there were some fairly believable (By Oz standards) resolutions where many of the surviving characters gained some self-knowledge and began to perceive something greater than themselves. While what would happen was immediately obvious to anyone who knows Macbeth, the theatrical ending was oddly suitable for a series that always worked best as heightened melodrama. Moreover, by ending the twisted menage a trois it brought the series to a relatively neat close, with the fact that the outside was finally glimpsed outside the flashback scenes firmly highlighting that there would be no more episodes.Oz has been a phenomenal influence on television, it demonstrated there was a place for proper acting on the small screen, it showed that audiences could accept taboo languages/subjects and that a big budget, used wisely ,can pay dividends - with a phenomenal number of actors from the show subsequently becoming famous in other dramas. While occasionally laughably bad (Reverand Cloutier's ghost?) it was always innovative, and will be remembered for its place in television's great Renaissance.

bought the first series cheap got addicted.
Got series 1 for £5, in a supermarket, watched it and it was so good I ended up buying every one so I could watch from start to finish. I have never seen this on British television, maybe I missed it or it has never been shown. This about a prison and features the usual conflicts and violence. I would say this is better than The Wire, it's well worth having a look to see if you become addicted like I did.

US prison system
brilliant series. bit of an indictment of the US prison system....corrupt politics etc....usual culprits! I have often been found shouting at the screen in absolute frustration & disbelief: is it really like that in the US prison system?? You have to be able to stomach a whole heap of violence , sex & swearing but all in all, it's a gripping series & I shall be sorry to watch the last episode.

I loved this show and would have liked a longer final ...
I loved this show and would have liked a longer final series as the murders came thick and fast and lots of storylines felt rushed or even abandoned.Definitely worth watching from season 1, such a fantastic cast throughout.

Düster und unbeschreiblich gut
Die Serie OZ ist wirklich super. Habe die 6 Staffeln in Rekordzeit verschlungen. Man sollte der englischen Sprache allerdings schon mächtig sein um OZ zu genießen.
