They’re the ones who understand the hidden patterns most of us miss. If you’ve ever walked away from a conversation thinking “that could’ve gone better,” then this book is worth your time. Three insights stood out: 1️⃣ Every conversation has a type, and it matters. Duhigg breaks down interactions into practical (what), emotional (how), and social (who). Knowing which one you’re in helps you match your approach and avoid talking past people. 2️⃣ Elite communicators sync rhythms. They match pace, energy, and tone, not to mimic, but to build rapport. This synchronization creates trust and makes people feel heard before a single idea is exchanged. 3️⃣ Every conflict has two layers. There’s the surface issue and the hidden one. Supercommunicators know how to ask, “What’s the real concern beneath this?” Resolving the deeper layer dissolves tension naturally. Master communicators don’t just exchange information, they recognize patterns, sync rhythms, and navigate hidden layers. This book is a practical guide to doing exactly that.

Great read. Great listen. A boatload of useful, even immediately actionable, and kind of fun information. Enjoyed it both as a read and a listen.

I’d say the first 75% of this book has some very good info in it, but then it seemed to go off the rails talking about the COVID/Vaccine hesitancy dynamic. For one, I didn’t find the tips the author was trying to use through this conversation, but secondly I thought the subject matter was still “to be determined” on which approach was correct on Covid vaccines. Plus, he made several mentions to why the patients were niave/wrong but made no mention to why those patients were not as trusting of the medical field to begin with (they took the bait from Big Pharma opioid epidemic, why should we trust them to do their due diligence on these rushed to the market COVID vaccines?) I thought the author did try to “land the plane” pretty effectively by taking all views into consideration on the DEI conversations, but even that I could see a lot of readers who think not enough is being discussed about diversity will be irritated that Duhigg gave compelling arguments for both sides on that. Overall, I thought it was a decent book but felt like the last 25% brought down a very good first 3/4 of the book. I’d just stay away from any COVID talk in books unless it’s a main subject! The risk outweighs the reward!

Well-written and paced with lots of practical tools built in. I'm going to read again in the near future to cement the learnings.

For around a year end a half my readings have mainly focused on communication and psychology. This book summed and helped me with my understanding of those books and is really fun to read
