I love Phoenix stretched canvases, the 3/4 kind anyway, as a respectable artist grade canvas at a good price on a moment's notice. So - are the panels quite as amazing for the price as the stretched? TL/Dr version: no. But they're nice enough. The priming is fine, for acrylic at any rate. I've used one with water-soluble oils as well and found that just going in without additional gesso still gives good smooth results. I don't paint glass-smooth classical surface on boards like these, but if I did, I'd put on a coat or two of primer myself. I wanted to know - are these MDF core? Really? What's inside this rigid, tightly stretched, nice little panel? Tear one of the little ones up, like I did, and you know it's cardboard. It's great cardboard, mind you. I've had less warping on these than any other paper core board canvas that I've used or made. But it's a paper-based board, at the end of the day. As expected for the price, honestly. I'd still feel fine about using these for more casual final work, it just means that I would put down a coat of gloss gel medium or two between the board as-is and whatever I prime or paint on it. This will act as a long-term buffer against discoloration, not perfectly archival, but reasonably sound as a step in that direction. Oh, and if you're worried about bowing do both sides and you have cut down on the bowing of any flat thing you paint. I like these a lot for work intended for reproduction - pops into a scanner, doesn't take up all my space, has some longevity and durability that paper doesn't.

I've ordered canvas PANELS (as on pics and mentioned in description), not canvas stretched on wooden frames. So disappointed, wasting time. Return.
