I bought this thinking it was a clean, sugar-free syrup for coffee. The listing makes it look health-conscious with 0 calories, 0 sugar, keto-friendly, cheerful icons and no sign of the real ingredients. The product photos only show the front of the bottle and a cropped nutrition panel. Feels intentionally selective. When it arrived, the full label told a very different story. Here’s what’s actually in the bottle, and why it’s a concern: Additives inside Jordan’s Skinny Syrup Vanilla: - E950 (Acesulfame K) – Artificial sweetener. Permitted in the UK but under long-term safety review. Linked to gut microbiome disruption in some studies. - E955 (Sucralose) – Another synthetic sweetener. Stable when cold, but can form chlorinated byproducts when heated (e.g. in hot coffee). The EU has recently flagged it for re-evaluation. - E211 (Sodium Benzoate) – Preservative that can form benzene (a known carcinogen) if combined with vitamin C and exposed to heat or light. - E514 (Sodium Sulphate) – Rare in UK food products. Technically allowed but not typically used in retail foods here. Often found in detergents. Raised my eyebrows. - E202 (Potassium Sorbate) – Common preservative. Generally safe, but can cause irritation or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. - E330 (Citric Acid) – Natural-sounding but industrially processed. May cause mouth or gut irritation in some people. - E150a (Plain Caramel Colouring) – Artificial colouring. Less controversial than other caramel types, but it adds nothing but a processed look. - E460 (Cellulose) – Thickener. Plant-derived but ultra-processed in this context. None of this is highlighted on the listing. The full list is buried far down the page, well below all the health claims, and not shown in the product image gallery at all. Packaging red flag: As shown in the photo, the original bottle doesn’t include this breakdown, likely because it’s made in the USA, where ingredients like this often aren’t listed in as much detail. A separate label was added by the UK distributor, which shows the full list of additives and E-numbers. So the only reason I even saw what was really inside was thanks to that UK-applied label, not because the brand itself was being transparent. Verdict: It technically ticks the “0 sugar” box, but this is very clearly an ultra-processed product dressed up to look natural and health-conscious. If you're actively trying to reduce your intake of artificial sweeteners, preservatives, or processed additives, this is the opposite of what you'd expect based on the Amazon page. I won't be buying again, and I think Amazon should require more accurate product photography showing both front and back labels when chemical additives like this are used.
