What a BOOK!
I have never in my entire F****** LIFE read a book w/ more F****** revelations on EVERY PAGE. HOLY F***. No wonder Bob F******* Dylan copied the title for his 2001 album. I'm on p. 25 and I've filled every margin w/ notes along the way. Pure intellectual Majesty. Minstrelsy was THE most popular American art form for decades, the 19th-century predecessor to Movies and TV. Why? Eric Lott explains EVERYTHING.p.s. I've never seen it before, but the cover of this edition is strangely waxy to the touch rather than smooth - clearly, a publisher's decision, but a strange one nonetheless! Still, the book is sheer genius, so don't let that stop you!

Always a Classic
I’ve read this book multiple times over the course of my academic career. No matter how far away from the 1980s we get it still holds weight in cultural studies and in my work. If you’re interested in histories of race and blackface minstrelsy in America, it is worth a read as a foundational text.
