Access to History: Civil Rights in the USA 1945-68 Paperback – Illustrated, 27 Jun. 2008

Love these Access to History books. Use them lots with my sixth form and always a good way to get an overview of a topic for the first time.

I bought this as I am doing a GCSE in History. Rather late in life, I know! A really useful book for my assignments. I have just ordered the one on India in the same series.

I purchased this book as a possible companion source teaching Civil Rights Paper 3 and Rights Protest Paper 1 for IB History. While the book is detailed and organized, one can help but see her biased and racist attitude towards African Americans including her raw assessment of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as a sex crazed lover of white women. (See pp. 81, 83-84) This is unexpected in this type of text, as this is designed to support students studying British A-levels. She does not give a similar treatment to other notorious womanizers such as JFK and the like. She has also written a book specifically to support Paper 1 Rights and Protests and if it is anything like this work, I am afraid I will have to pass.
