While her method of counting seems overly generous (chapter sub-headings without any text beneath them count as some of the 101 tips), there’s no question that the first half of her guidebook contains a good bit of helpful information for purchasers or would-be purchasers of Amazon’s popular portable streaming media device. However, the second half of her guide is little more than a manual on a third-party platform called Kodi that often produces a lot of tricks on unwary users.If the author stopped her book after her first 37 tips, I would have given “Fire Stick” a much better rating. The book does include a decent manual on the features and installation of the Fire TV Stick. It also features a discussion of some of the more popular apps that can be installed and a few brief notes on troubleshooting a malfunctioning Stick. Some of the material is dated (this book was written in 2017). Overall, however, it provides a decent introduction to the device.Unfortunately, the author does not stop with Tip 37 (on troubleshooting). Instead, she immediately launches into a discussion of the Kodi platform. You won’t find any mention of Kodi on the sales page for the book or the Table of Contents. (Technically, all of this material is part of the chapter on troubleshooting.) And there’s a good reason for that. Kodi is not available through the Amazon store. Instead, it must be sideloaded onto the Fire TV Stick. And, while Kodi is a very versatile platform, it poses several dangers for those unfamiliar with its intricacies.As the author mentions, Kodi allows users to view their own content on other devices via the Fire TV Stick. And the platform itself is a legal, open source software program. However, Its most common use is in connection with various third-party apps that enable viewers to access content through those apps, and here's where the trouble lies for the unwary. Some of these third-party apps these are familiar ones like YouTube. However, few people would want to go through a complicated process of sideloading Kodi merely to access YouTube when they can just download the YouTube app from Amazon directly to the Fire TV Stick in less than a minute. No, a significant reason why Kodi is popular is that it allows people to download pirated content through some of these third-party apps. It also allows people to unknowingly download viruses to their Fire TV Stick (after all, the stick is a computer) through some of those same third-party apps.To be fair, the author does include a brief, somewhat confusing discussion of the copyright implications of accessing pirated content. But there’s no mention in the book of the risk of downloading viruses through Kodi or the possibilities of voiding warranties on the Fire TV Stick. And, while she suggests using a VPN to access content through Kodi, the discussion of how to do that is rather perfunctory. My guess is that most people with no knowledge of the subject won’t really understand the purpose of a VPN and why it may be highly advisable to use one here.Most people interested in sideloading Kodi on their Fire TV Sticks will probably find instructions elsewhere on the Internet rather than in this book. However, I feel that an author who includes this sort of subject matter in a guidebook intended for novices is very irresponsible. Those who fully understand the risks involved with the Kodi platform can make their own decisions. Unfortunately, many who read “Fire Stick” won’t have any realistic idea of what they are getting involved with or even that some of these risks exist. During 2015, Amazon came out with a new remote that works with the Fire Stick, one that is better suited for voice activation. There are a lot of cool things that you can do with the Fire Stick when you have it hooked up to your television. As soon as Amazon releases a new product that entices a lot of people to purchase it, there always seems to be a few other companies who try to create a similar product that they can sell as well. If you are a gamer and want to be able to use your new product to deal with games, you will want to go with the Fire Stick. Great content guide for everyone. Thanks to the Author. It was no help at all.
