FLIP FLAPPERS

Incredible animation
If you watch anime for the weird, this show ought to do it for you. Feels very episodic, unlike some anime. Environments change drastically episode to episode, and there’s almost always something interesting going on. The artwork itself is what made me give this show a 5 star rating though. I don’t know what studio made this, but they must be a big deal, or a tremendously good upstart.

This is now on my top faves list. You're really doing yourself a disservice by not watching this.

Another great take on magical girls
If you enjoyed Madoka's darker take on magical girls, then you owe it to yourself to watch this as well. Just like Madoka had its own unique style thanks to the amazing staff at SHAFT, Flip Flappers has its own unique style that works well with all of the alien worlds and creatures the girls run into. The animation is absolutely fantastic and, without spoiling anything, the story definitely goes to some very dark places.

Living life with good friends and adventure
The main character of the story is a down to earth girl with a same "day to day" routine existence. Until she meets a girl that is almost her total opposite that gets her into otherworldly adventures through a mysterious organization. After the first bout, she has doubts about ever doing it again, but after some coaxing, she does more and more until she is in wholeheartedly. The story is really more about having friends and their support. The Flip Flap aspect is about them going through a transformation that combines and unifies their powers. There are some secrets revealed that bring on feelings of betrayal. Later on though, in spite of the doubts she has, her true friends are revealed.I can't say I fully understood all of the details about what was happening with the alternate world after one viewing, but the story is well presented and it has characters you care very much about.Definitely a feel good ending.("ANIME: Storytelling at its best")

Everyone has the attention span of a goldfish
Uninteresting story, annoying characters, cringeworthy voice acting. If I hear her yell "Cocona" one more time I will scream at the top of my lungs.

The viewing point changes what is seen.
Over the last two weeks I got to watch this twice. I watched it once (on Blu-Ray) with a group of adults, starting one morning and ending way too late that evening, breaks for necessary bodily functions and stretching between episodes and an hour break for lunch-- then everyone ran for freedom after it was over. The second time it I watched it I was alone, streaming the dubbed version, and split that up over a few days.I am breaking with the other reviewers because I felt that it is the battle between the ego and super ego on a playing field provided by the id. The id sets up the actions and responses, and the ego wants to go one way, the super ego wants to go a different way, and war breaks out with reality having no portion of the action. And I reconfirmed a several year old opinion from a subtitled DVD copy, that this went so far overboard it hurt its own story by trying too hard, and basically confused the ego versus super ego conflict while not examining the underlying limits of behavior that the id allowed to go completely out of control.I felt the "girls" were both more than old enough to realize ramifications of actions taken by the ego and attempts by the super ego to pull back and shackle those actions-- they should have had more recognition of what they were doing, how they were acting, and the effect of actions on third parties and pulled back from the artsy "imaginary" violence.A bad opinion, I guess, in something others loved, but it grated my nerves and made me angry in how it seemed to be an excuse of doing the wrong thing to the wrong person at the wrong time, so I gave it points for great audio and visual set up, but cut points for blurring the line between playing out the scene and just seeing how long you could get away with misbehavior. That is why I gave it a two out of five.

Great Show, Great Boxset
Flip Flappers itself is a fun, beautiful and pretty unique adventure series that sadly flew under the radar when it first came out. It mixes elements of sci-fi, fantasy and fairy tale and features some of the most vibrant art I've seen in the medium. It isn't too plot-heavy, following somewhat of an episodic structure through most of the show and focusing on the individual stories to create a broader narrative, something that works very well. I'd recommend this to anyone looking for something a little different. The box itself is gorgeous with some amazing designs and prints, as well as a 300-something page book full of concept art, storyboards, interviews and other interesting tidbits. Very happy with my purchase.
