Iced Earth -Gettysburg [DVD] [2011]

This dvd was bought for christmas present ( i have the album so i know the music is good, its a no brainer five star for someone who likes American history.

Although I was looking forward to the DVD of the album centrepiece, 'Gettysburg', I was concerned about the political aspects, as Jon Shaffer comes across more as Ted Nugent than Kofi Annan.This means I'm glad to report that the main piece of this production is remarkably good. Although, it does come with qualifications. Anyone looking for a ripsnorting re-enactment is in for a disappointment. Because this is more History Channel than Scuzz, leading us through a wealth of historical documentation to a background of Iced Earth. Which for history buffs like me is an absolute delight, but may leave others shaking their heads slightly. You don't even get to see the band, as it sticks strictly to the historical side of things, and, as such, is quite fascinating. All of the money seems to have gone into that part as the accompanying documentary with John Schaffer and tour guide Ted Gajewski walking through the site is a handheld camera affair, which impacts upon the narrative.Now, the downside. The jingoism raises it head with the video for 'When The Eagle Cries', which was, according to Shaffer, banned from MTV, something I heartily disapprove of. Just because I find it flag waving at its worst shouldn't deny it a place on the schedules. In fact, the video is extremely well done, with Shaffer and Ripper Owens in acoustic mode amidst a changing backdrop of September 11 scenes to great effect. I'The Reckoning' is a standard metal video shoot. There's also a long advertisement for his shop called 'Spirit of 76', which is quite boring and a very long interview with Jon Shaffer. Now this is either fascinating or dreadful, depending on your viewpoint. Everything you ever suspected about Shaffer is confirmed here. A dogmatic egomaniac in full flight is how I see it. You may witness dedication and self belief.There's not much for the casual visitor and even some Iced Earth fans may be put off by the historical perspective, but you have to admire the effort that went into the main piece. Personally, I'd rather have had that as a stand alone DVD EP and dropped the rest.

J'attendais un film sur la guerre de cecession, je n'ai eu droit qu'à des images avec des chants dessus et quelques commentaires indigestes, sans aucune histoire ni resconstitution historique. Quelle déception !

Anyone who has heard Gettysburg knows that the music is excellent, and the lyrics are powerful. The video is incredible. With a combination of still and live shots, including both re-enactors and actual photographs from the Civil War, the powerful, terrible story of Gettysburg is told in all its grandeur and tragedy.To make a modern reference for those who don't understand, more men died in three days on that blood-soaked battlefield than the US has lost in four years of war since 9-11. The Battle of Gettysburg was awful, and tragic and grand, and, ultimately, necessary for the preservation of our nation. For most metal bands, it would have been an act of foolish hubris to try to make this video about such a momentous event.Iced Earth stepped up to the plate and knocked it out of the park.

リージョンフリーでPS2でも再生できました。但し、内容がLIVE DVDでは無く、前作The Glorious Burden作成のドキュメンタリー的な性格が非常に強い作品です。LIVEを期待された方には、ちょっと厳しい内容です。収録されている音源は、アルバムThe Glorious Burdenからの楽曲のみで、新規の音の収録はありませんでした。楽曲が流れている後ろの映像もLIVEの映像ではなく、ジャケの画面が延々と流れるといったもので面白みを感じませんでした。その他にはシェイファーがGettysburgを訪問しての、アルバム作成の際のインプットの話、The Glorious BurdenのPVが3曲、シェイファーへのインタビューといった構成です（字幕が出ないので余りしゃべっている内容は掴めませんでした）。昨年の来日公演もキャンセルになっていますので、期待したんですが・・・。早くLIVEを見させてくれ～！
